Arsenal 3 Real Madrid 0.
A wonderful example of what can happen when the spirit takes a team.
And a throwback to a time when an English club winning big in Europe felt good for the whole English game.

5Live experts on Lewis-Skelly red card:

Pat Nevin: “a bar so low even a limbo dancing snake couldn’t get under it…”

Mark Chapman: “baffling and nonsensical from supposedly one of our best referees.”

I don't think anyone except VAR or Michael Oliver thought that was a red.

And while on the topic of French commentary, I’m told that after the red card they were convinced it would be overturned and then at half time asked whether they were sleeping in the VAR room… 🫠

When the concept of VAR was first mooted I liked the idea of experts with technology to advise on terrible decisions. It seemed unfair to refs that they had a split second and maybe a bad angle, while millions at home saw instant replays.

But how can VAR, and assistant VARS, be this bad/mad? 🧵

it genuinely sucks that basically nothing on the internet works well anymore. search? barely works. social media? filled with garbage engagement-bait designed to game the algorithm. news websites? pages that refresh at random or so covered in video ads that it’s impossible to read stories
