The Holy Guardian Angel (HGA) in Western Hermeticism is both a deeply personal spiritual guide and a transcendental aspect of one's highest self: one’s truest divine nature. The most important goal for a magician is the “Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel,” which is both a mystical union with the higher self and a direct relationship with a separate spiritual being. The HGA may be interpreted psychologically as a symbol for the unconscious or the aspirant’s higher self. Yet it's also a genuinely independent and objective spiritual being, not merely a projection or aspect of the magician’s psyche. The HGA is a protector, guide, and teacher whose central functions are to help the practitioner discern their True Will and to provide spiritual guidance on the path to liberation and wholeness.
