you can love a character and still admit when they’re wrong. i love ed teach but can acknowledge his flaws (he has none) & can hold him accountable for his wrong doings (he’s never done anything wrong in his life) & call him out for his actions (which are always correct)

We have a communal kitchen at work (sink/cabinets/fridge) and there’s a dry rack of dishes and mugs that have been sitting so long there’s dust on them. I really want to chuck the whole fucking thing.

None of these are terrifying because none have a cat on them.
I get where this is coming from and broadly don't disagree, but also there are lots of historical pirate flags that were in use at the time that the classic jolly roger was first designed. Here are some examples.
