When people think of deities, they think of a deity being one thing.

"Inanna is the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of war, political power, divine law, sensuality, love, fertility, and procreation."

#booklog 13 (12) Inanna – Emily H. Wilson

An enjoyable enough fantasy read – if that’s the right genre for retellings of mythology – though wasn’t hooked enough to complete the trilogy

(Did I briefly confuse Emily H Wilson with the Emily Wilson who translated the Odyssey & Iliad? Maybe)

The first author in human history whose name we know...

is a woman.

Here’s my daily heresy:

Venus is the light that returns after descent. So was Jesus. And like Inanna, Jesus descends, is pierced, dies, and returns radiant.

It’s the sacred feminine cycle of blood, then silence, then light. Jesus *is* Venus…

Ishtar, a powerful Mesopotamian goddess primarily known as the goddess of love and #war, and also associated with fertility and storms; was worshipped by the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians, and her worship evolved over time. She is often identified with the Sumerian goddess Inanna.
Friday essay: the legend of Ishtar, first goddess of love and war
Love, it is said, is a battlefield, and it was no more so than for the first goddess of love and war, Ishtar. Her legend has influenced cultural archetypes from Aphrodite to Wonder Woman.

"Friday is associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and desire. The day is often celebrated as a time to honor love, beauty, and feminine energy, and is associated with acts of self-love, romance, and creativity."

Her predecessors, Astarte & Inanna, are also goddesses of war.

Inanna didn’t ask for the Eanna.

The Temple wasn’t given. It wasn’t earned. It was Hers by right, and She walked in like She belonged because She did. What’s your Eanna? The space and the life that you were meant for, even when doubt (or the world) says otherwise?

yamayuandadu.tumblr.com/post/7889645... New article is up on my blog! I'm looking into the sources responsible for the common modern perception of Inanna and Ereshkigal as "polar opposites", into their supposed status as sisters, and into metaphorical use of kinship terms in ancient Mesopotamia.

Inanna danced in the robes of a priest-king and roared in the voice of a lion. Her power was in shattering limits, and so are yours. However, the choice is yours. You can allow life to happen to you, never own up to your decisions, and live in misery, or you can take control, invoking Her power.
