Hadn't clocked until this tweet that this is true of every defeated Labour government other than New Labour: more votes in defeat in 1951 than in victory in 1945, more in 1970 than in 1964. And frankly, whether they win or lose next time, would bet large amounts will get more votes than 2024.
Labour got more votes in 1979 then they did in Oct 1974.

I have to say, I find this letter completely baffling for a number of reasons:
Britain’s top scientists have written to the PM warning that the education system is holding back children and the country and expressing concern about the timidity of the government’s curriculum and assessment review @theobserveruk.bsky.social observer.co.uk/news/nationa...

My main question is why stop at 2p?

Why not 5p, or the full 8p?
Why should we switch 2p of tax from National Insurance to Income Tax? ⤵️

Income Tax raises more money and spreads the burden more fairly. The switch would raise £6 billion, and leave the vast majority of payslips unaffected.

First up - yes, Zelensky is no friend of Ukraine's working class in the sense that his government pursues right-wing, neoliberal, anti-worker economic policies.

Unlike Zarah Sultana, we actually know something about this...

Nothing on the BBC Radio news this morning. Nothing I could find on their website. This is an MP from the party whose lead in the opinion polls normally ensures them wall-to-wall coverage. She spouts racist nonsense for which even she feels obliged to apologise. What on earth are they playing at?

Should go further and tax supermarket beer at a higher rate than at the moment- raises revenue, targets the biggest source of binge drinking and might help get people back into pubs.

I think I’ve just been in the best lesson I’ve ever seen. What a privilege.

Tons of indicators of good teaching, but I reckon the numbers of seconds between a teacher calling on a student (or students), and the student then saying something meaningful, is hard to beat.

I've written a book!

Attacking the Space: Inside Rugby's Tactical and Data Revolution is the book I wanted to read as a rugby obsessive kid. It will be released on the 29th January 2026, the pre-order link is:

Just utterly horrific, a despicable act, a personal tragedy and an anathema to democracy.
Just in: Donald Trump announced Charlie Kirk's death after the conservative activist was shot on Wednesday. The close ally of the US president was speaking with students at an outside event at Utah Valley University when he was struck in the neck. on.ft.com/48aRc40

It’s a different time and a different moment, but I can’t see any harm in reflecting on probably the best speech ever made.

On a night where scores died in riots across the US, the city that heard it kept the peace.

I suspect the best way out for Starmer might be to have two ministers run for deputy, one of whom (Ed M?) can soak up the left vote without being an anti-Starmer figure.

Unacceptable: 61%

% acceptable by party

Presumably the upside of cutting two sides is to save the £10m on funding they cost in Model A.

But the two other sides will only receive just over an additional £1m each, so why does the WRU think it’s reasonable to pocket the other £8m?

The reason for getting rid of the Teach First brand is to encourage more bidders and get a lower price but the cost is you lose a large proportion of the policy benefit.

It's procurement leading policy and it's happening *all* the time now.

Ministers need to get a grip.

Shock announcement: NC Senator Thom Tillis just announced he is retiring, less than 24 hours after he opposed starting debate on his party’s mega bill.

His seat is up in 2026, and having it be an open seat sure changes the calculus and Democratic chances of flipping it.

Can make a reasonable political argument that of the £110bn extra in infrastructure spending, there's no political benefit even in London from DLR or Bakerloo extension. Can make a policy argument that Met needs reform not money. But struggle to conceive of an argument against a tourist levy.
As per Playbook this morn, a row is brewing between HMT and Sadiq Khan over what London is to get - or not - in the SR. The Mayor's office big asks are: DLR & Bakerloo Line extensions, powers to introduce a tourist/visitors levy, and 'adequate' Met Police funding. Currently, they expect to get none.
