💿JIMMY CLIFF 🎸You Can Get It If You Really Want (1970)

In memory of one of the key artists to introduce me to reggae, Jimmy Cliff (1944/07/30 - 2025/11/24). Another great cut from "The Harder They Come." Also recommended: his more recent recordings.

💿JIMMY CLIFF 🎸The Harder They Come (1972)

In memory of one of the key artists to introduce me to reggae, Jimmy Cliff (1944/07/30 - 2025/11/24). Another iconic cut from that time, from the same-titled soundtrack (which starred Jimmy Cliff as an actor).

Great ending to an almost perfect 1973-11-17 #AT40 Have a great week and Thanksgiving hashtaggers!

Hate to drop some sad news into the mix, but RIP to Jellybean Johnson of The Time, apparently quite unexpectedly. He just posted on FB several days ago (his 69th birthday).

Ahhh, the perfect vaccine for the DeFranco Fam virus: Gladys Knight & The Pips' immaculate 'Midnight Train To Georgia.' #AT40

What a bop! Ike & Tina Turner 'Nutbush City Limits' at #22 #AT40 Following an Isleys classic 'That Lady.' (#23) Because it was the era I grew up in, I have the Isley's '70's sound in my head when I first think of them. Then I recall a generation of their classics going back to 1959 (as Casey noted)!

Although I've said that the 1970-1972 #AT40 hits played the biggest role in jump-starting my pop culture music education, this 1973-11-17 countdown is right up there with the best of the best! Heavy assist to the soul/r&b chart (as usual). By '73 I was drawing inspiration from other sources, too!

Wow! What a great start to this week's #AT40 (1973-11-17). Dirrrrrty! In sync with my music tastes; here in 2025 I own CDs with the hits by Marvin Gaye (twice!), Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, and Pointer Sisters. And most of the other hits are fine chart representatives! More top-tier cuts incoming.

James Brown is about as innovative as #AT40 music gets! It's just that a lot of his genius was in the syncopated rhythms from one bop to the next. Maybe if someone isn't familiar with JB the hits might "sound the same," but to fans like me each cut has its own unique flavor. Plus...his GREAT bands!

Not giving away any spoilers of course, but the rest of this 1970-11-28 #AT40 reflects why I state that 1970-72 AM radio was such a profound musical education for me, setting a solid foundation for the many directions that my music tastes would take from then to now.

I thought Canned Heat's 'Let's Work Together' was a total banger in '70,, and still getting that vibe in '25. And now, The Fifth Dimension with the iconic 'One Less Bell To Answer.' I may have been only 13yo, but I loved it then (and of course now)! Marilyn McCoo! Whoohoo! #AT40

Turning up the feels c/o The Four Tops with 'Still Water (Love)' at #28 #AT40 (1970-11-28). Next up, the story of my music collecting life: bought the 45rpm of Santana's 'Black Magic Woman' (#27) at the time it was a hit. In 2025, own the SACD version in Quad sound c/o a Japanese import!

Respectable attempt to sing about 'good times' by Ray Price on this week's #AT40, However, this is MY idea of how to explore the topic (from much later in the 1970s) ...

1970-11-28 WOC #AT40 ... let's me relive my first lessons in then-current top pop hits, learned as I was beginning to listen to AM radio (late May '70 = my actual starting point). Quite an education, e.g., this week we already have some top-tier soul & rock tunes in the ultra-clean dirty 30's.

What perfect album came out the year you turned 16?

(as with every year I have multiple choices to choose from. Herbie Hancock's 'Head Hunters' is a perfectly perfect album re: '73)

Not even in my top tier of Donna Summer bangers, but her 'McArthur Park' topping this 1978-11-11 #AT40 is to be honest the only version of that tune that works hard for my money! Have a great week hashtaggers, I'm about to watch my alma mater USC play in a rare rain-soaked home game. On tv, foe me!

Listening to these hour-longer #AT40 countdowns from an era (1978-11-11) where my music tastes were more miss than hit re: pop radio ... may explain my extended morning nap. I recall #24 'Love Is In The Air' & nothing else until the Stones' #8 'Beast Of Burden.' But I'm refreshed so I win!

Here comes President Clinton! George Clinton! With 'One Nation Under A Groove' under the Funkadelic name. Was great back then to get to buy both Parliament & Funkadelic albums every year, as well as side projects and splinter acts (e.g., Bootsy, The Brides Of Funkenstein, etc.). 1978-11-11 #AT40
