It seems ironic to be reviewing a book that is about the consequences of reviewing! As an Edinburgh resident, I do enjoy the festival and all the exciting things that happen in August but I also hate the way the city is so busy, public transport gets delayed and it's so difficult to get anywhere in the centre of town. Like many people, I do read the reviews and sometimes they can be vicious.

Israel illegally boarded a humanitarian mission in international waters with heavy weaponry, then disappeared the crew. Al Jazeera is the only one I can find that is reporting on this without Israeli fluff or propaganda.

Cover of The Book of Guilt by Catherine Chidgey is held up in front of a bookcase England, 1979. Vincent, Lawrence and William are the last remaining residents of a secluded New Forest home, part of the government's Sycamore Scheme. Every day, the triplets do their chores, play their games and take their medicine, under the watchful eyes of three mothers: Mother Morning, Mother Afternoon and Mother Night.

Their nightmares are recorded in The Book of Dreams.
Their lessons are taken from The Book of Knowledge.
And their sins are reported in The Book of Guilt.

All the boys want is to be sent to the Big House in Margate, where they imagine a life of sun, sea and fairground rides. But, as the government looks to shut down the Sycamore Homes, the triplets begin to question everything they have been told. What did I think? I absolutely loved this book. It’s one of the best books I’ve read this year and I can’t recommend it highly enough! It’s exquisitely written, compelling, shocking, heart-breaking, and just bloody brilliant! It’s clear from the start of the book that the boys are different, and that the people in their local town are wary of them. This felt like such a powerful way to explore how people who are perceived to be different are often treated in the world - reduced to generalisations and misconceptions, often judged on the actions of just one person in their community, and held to a higher standard than those who fear them. The book does an excellent job of holding a mirror up to what society as a whole often allows to happen, as long as it’s happening to someone you see as other, or less than you. The Book of Guilt has earned comparisons to Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - another one of my favourite books, and rightly so in my opinion. Not only because there’s a similarity in the themes in both books but because the writing is spectacular and it really makes you feel something. I know this is going to be a book I’ll be recommending to everyone so please, do yourself a favour and buy it now!

There are few things I like more than an interlinked short story collection (sorry, ‘mosaic novel’), and I’m so glad to have picked this up on my last visit to @portybooks.bsky.social.

I’ve not yet read Darraj’s previous book, A Curious Land, but now really want to do so.
