I’m an FB REFugee

Is there anything that comes remotely close to FB Ref?

I know FotMob and Sofascore and all that but the formatting is terrible to do your own analysis

Any advice?

This harms the football data ecosystem more broadly too. Most people who start in football data aren’t buying raw data, they’re experimenting with freely available stuff (h/t Statsbomb for leading the way) and that’s how they become analysts etc on the pro side later.

Losing FBref is going to only further hamper independent soccer media (and industry media too!) because no one can afford a Wyscout or StatsBomb account on a newsletter/blog/podcast salary.

FB Ref is losing access to Opta Data

I'm devastated. Sorry everyone

That's everything I use to create my own stuff

I don't know what to do now

Some interesting takeaways from last years preseason matches

1. Joe Willis started every game
->starting keeper all year

2. Maher started 4/6, Zim 4/6, Palacios 1/6
->Maher+Zim was the preferred duo to start the season

3. Games 3 and 4 were the closest to a first choice lineup

This is the reason I'm most excited for Espinoza

I highlighted the two main target areas for Espi's Key Passes last season

Who likes to drift to the left and score goals on his right foot? Sam Surridge

Who likes to charge down the right and score? Hany Mukhtar

While we’re hyped about Cristian Espinoza I took a look at our latest signing Warren Madrigal

He’s a proven, young scorer for a reasonable fee but there some red flags that worry me. Read about all that and more here 👇👇

I just tweeted this last night.

Cristian Espinoza is a great way to replace Brugman's chance creation

Nashville will still need a midfielder who can bring the ball into the final 3rd. But I think this is where Corcoran may come in
January 7, 2026 at 4:35 PM
Christian Espinoza ranks last season

2nd in xAG
1st in Key Passes
29th ProgP
15th Prog Carries
98th Passes into Final 3rd
3rd for Passes into the Box

The perfect 3rd DP
January 7, 2026 at 2:38 PM
Yeah this is the perfect signing

A reliable, proven player in MLS who can create for Mukhtar and Surridge and bag a couple himself

He plays on the wing but he also tucks in and can run through the middle. Which is needed in Nashville’s 4222

Win now mode

We need to spend more time talking about Gaston Brugman's replacement.

He played 1,200 min for NSC and was one of the best in the league at getting the ball into the box and into the final 3rd on a per-90 basis.

Corcoran should help but we need a big signing here too

More on Kevin Walder. Huntsville’s newest signing
Kevin Walder, who I covered at the 2023 CONCACAF U-17 Championship for the short lived Target Scouting Patreon, has broken into senior football and is popping off in a big way. 6 goals and an assist in 540 Panamanian league games so far.

From Ricardo Icaza on X

Another Panamanian will join Huntsville

19yo RW Kevin Walder from CD Plaza Amador has 11 goals in 35 career aps since May 2023

Walder also played for the Panama u20 team this past summer at the World Cup

Here’s his radar from this year, with much fewer minutes, which causes higher variation in the bars.

A lot of the same, but he hasn’t been as good creatively, and finishing is a touch worse. No real worries considering the small sample size.
December 24, 2025 at 4:44 PM
Warren Madrigal, you have my attention

Good ball carrier, gets shots on target, works to get touches in the box, and a smart passer too

He didn’t have many Key Passes, but .26 xA/KP is ridiculous. No glaring weaknesses here

My only question is why isn’t he still with Valencia?
December 24, 2025 at 4:29 PM
Per Kevin Jimenez on Twitter

Warren Madrigal the 21 year old striker will join Nashville SC. Likely our last u22 spot

Madrigal has played for Saprissa since 2020 and has 1 goal in 12 aps this season as well as 6 goals in 27 career aps for Los Ticos
December 24, 2025 at 4:23 AM
The stats don’t really jump off the page. His xA appears high in this graph, but it’s actually much lower than Lovitz’s and Najar’s.

He’s not a great ball progressor, either, although he does win his defensive duels at a decent rate.
December 22, 2025 at 9:54 PM
Nashville SC academy player Josh Swanzy will head to AFC Bournemouth on trial

It’s been a good season for the striker who leads the line for Nashville’s u18 team

2025 was a breakout campaign for Woobens Pacius in the USL Championship. After making his international debut for Haiti, the striker looks set to factor into Nashville's plans in 2026.

LOVE this

Joe is a great guy, reliable backup, significantly cheaper now, and as NSC gets younger he will be a valuable veteran in the locker room

Schwake has earned a chance but I like having a very capable backup
Sources: Nashville SC have re-signed goalkeeper Joe Willis through the 2026 season with an option for 2027. Willis's option was declined, but will return for at least one more year. Brian Schwake still expected to be the No. 1, but Willis brings stability and veteran depth.

My philosophy is that an average, cheap, young American GK is good enough. Schwake fits that description.

I’m not as excited about him as some others are. His xG numbers were below average in a small sample size, but it’ll do
🧵 We're diving into Nashville SC's 2025 season with individual looks at every player. First up: Brian Schwake, who earned MVP honors in the US Open Cup final and looks to be the No. 1 going forward.
