Imagine this world: after a storm, headlines say “Unsafe housing left thousands exposed” not “Natural Disaster.”

Response fixes inequalities, funding builds resilience, and leaders face questions.

Disasters are human-made.

We think we're so smart these days but some of the best ideas are old. This paper has been a cornerstone for my work, almost 50 years old. If we had listened we would have done everything possible to make development more equitable and reduce vulnerability to hazards.

The Texas floods show why using the term “natural disaster” matters. Funding cuts and other idealogical choices shaped the crisis, calling it ‘natural’ or an "act of God" shifts blame away from those policy choices.

At least 84 people have died at time of writing.
