the think that imo makes it such a wild card, is that yes, international competitions have been hosted at dubious places that do things like threaten athletes who speak out against the local government while there, but those places generally try to be on their best behavior for the good PR.

The problem with this take is that Trump is literally doing things no president has done before because the republican congress is capitulating and the Supreme Court wants a king. It's not just the 33% of Americans who voted for him who failed. It's a full failure across our institutions.
