Just realized I never shared my favorite albums of 2025. Terrible oversight on my part.
My Favorite Albums of 2025 Brian Dunne, Clams Casino — Perfect melody and lyric after perfect melody and lyric. Almost surgical. Okonski, October — Put this on, close your eyes and get lost in bittersweet reverie. Dax Riggs, Seven Songs for Spiders — A haunted musical graveyard (in the best way!) Preoccupations, Ill at Ease — Scratches that College Rock/Darkwave itch that never truly goes away. No Joy, Bugland — The best sounding album of 2025. Pure audio fruit salad! Denison Witmer, Anything At All — At once understated and over the top, like a robin’s egg painted with all the colors of the rainbow Viagra Boys, Viagr Aboys — So smart it’s dumb, or so dumb it’s smart? The year’s most quotable album. Cusp, What I Want Doesn’t Want Me Back — This feels like the album immediately before the masterpiece. Mark my words! Motrik, Earth — Perfect for speeding down the German highway in your mind. Jeff Tweedy, Twilight Override — This fucker is making us all look bad. Stop being so prolific, Jeff! ROSALíA, LUX — An album I admire more than love, but I sure as fuck admire it. Silvana Estrada, Vendrán — A vocal magician, with melodic smarts to match. Hammerhedd, Shivers — Just wrote about these relative tykes last week. Controlled aggression and a willingness to experiment Car Seat Headrest, The Scholars — The biggest of big swings. Overstuffed, but laudable. Will Paquin, Hahaha — There are five genuinely great songs on this. What more can you ask for? Rumer, In Session — For existing within your own internal coffee shop. Cory Hanson, I Love People — “Comforting” and “snarky” don’t usually go together, at least not this seemlessly. Erika de Casier, Lifetime — More artists should aspire to being Sade. The world would be a better place. Melody’s Echo Chamber, Unclouded — Great drums, great arrangements. Effortless and euro-funky. Titanic, HAGEN — Another album to admire more than love. But such creativity on display. Mabe Fratti clearly has her own muse. Gelli Haha, Switcheroo — Silly and fun and super weird. If “manic pixie dream girl” was an album. Magic Fig, Valerian Tea — Retro ren faire space prog, just like you wanted. Ken Yates, Total Cinema — Like a warm bath for your ears. Venus & the Flytraps, Demonette — DIY sing-songy power-pop that’s clearly made for people much younger than us. Bill Laurence, Lumen — Solo piano music to rein in your wanderlusting brain.

Well, here we are. We’ve finally made it to the last full day and hence, the last post of the year and exactly as planned, we’re going to be talking today about my favourite album of 2025: No Joy’s "Bugland". Originally formed as a duo in Montreal, Canada in 2009 by Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd, No Joy has gone through a number of personnel compositions over the years but is these days, for all intents and purposes, the musical vehicle for White-Gluz.

New Candys, The Uncanny Extravaganza 6. Lust For Youth and Croatian Amor, All Worlds 7. Mallrat, Light hit my face like a straight right 8. Marina, Princess of Power 9. Great Grandpa, Patience, Moonbeam 10. The Pearly Drops, The Voices Are Coming Back From the moment it dropped, No Joy's Bugland was the album of 2025 for me. A formidable contender for best shoegaze record of this decade, it reveals Jasmine White-Gluz's songwriting to be as surprising, muscular, and immersive as ever (and the live show rips, by the way). Elsewhere, I got hooked on scuzzy psychedelia from GOON and New Candys, and fell for the daydreamy, lighter-than-air hooks of Sedona and Sarah Klang. Mallrat and Pearly Drops both returned with albums of guitar-inflected indietronica that are impossible to categorize and seem recovered from some even stranger future era, while Great Grandpa's latest effort scratches that nostalgic itch for Nineties rock. Finally, it was a pleasure to hear Lust For Youth and Croatian Amor teaming up for a suite of icy Eurobeat tracks - and, of course, every release from pop royalty Marina will find a spot on my best-of-year list.
