We are different. Irreconcilable. You went to school. I went to work. You see a DNA sequence. I see Miscter Krabs laughing. AGCTACGACACGA. Fuck you big man

10 fascinating discoveries about Neanderthals in 2024, from 'Thorin' the last Neanderthal to an ancient glue factory
This year, we learned that our Neanderthal cousins were a lot like us, despite treading their own path that ended in extinction.

Had loads of fun making these two illustrations for PBS Eons' latest video, on how Neanderthals were incredibly adept apex predators. #paleoart #SciArt #artbyjulio

🧬⏳ Ancient humans and Neanderthals

Scientists have now studied 45,000-year-old human remains & found all non-Africans share Neanderthal DNA from a single mixing event 45,000–49,000 years ago!

This sheds light on how our ancestors spread across the world.

Humans may not have survived without Neanderthals
A new DNA analysis has shown that the arrival of modern humans from Africa was far from smooth.

Neanderthal ancestry through time: Insights from genomes of ancient and present-day humans
Gene flow from Neanderthals has shaped genetic and phenotypic variation in modern humans. We generated a catalog of Neanderthal ancestry segments in more than 300 genomes spanning the past 50,000 year...

Out today in @sciencemagazine, we've journeyed into our shared history with Neandertals by analyzing over 300 present-day and ancient modern humans, including 59 individuals who lived between 2,000 and 45,000 years ago.

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people!!

No individual person has more than 3 or 4% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present on earth today.
