Presidential Salute! Meanwhile, behind the scenes at the museum vibration detectors monitor safety of collections as they do for on-site music concerts. I think they have a ‘no stampede’ rule also. Emotional support wildebeest excepted.
Today Collins Barracks will host the 21 gun salute for Catherine Connolly's Presidential Inauguration.
The Inauguration Ceremony takes place in Dublin Castle but due to the city centre location, the gun salute needs to be further afield but within hearing distance.

This Underwood typewriter, likely the first with Irish characters, was used by the Gaelic League around 1905.
Now on display in the newly opened Changing Ireland Galleries in Collins Barracks, it’s a powerful symbol of everyday tools shaping Irish identity.

“No Sanctuary

It’s Hallowe’en. The turnip-man’s lopped head
Blazes at us through split bottle glass
And fumes and swims up like a wrecker’s lantern.
Death mask of harvest,
l mocker at All Souls
With scorching smells, red dog’s eyes in the night
We ring and stare into unhallowed light”

The turnip is what I grew up with. When darkness fell, you'd go out with your lantern and sparklers, and the world of winter was upon you, with ragged trees and starlings swirling above at sunset.
The next day the smell of the lantern was putrification. Can't help think now, pure phenomenology
Happy #Halloween from Ireland where a carved turnip started a craze. We celebrate ‘Samhain’ from sunset as an ancient Celtic tradition to mark the end of harvest and beginning of winter. Plaster replica of carved turnip in National Museum of Ireland - Country Life #samhain @nmireland.bsky.social
