Jim Jarmusch's DOWN BY LAW (1986) is a breezy character study wrapped in a prison break.

We discuss Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, self-imposed isolation, and its deceptive simplicity on today's episode!

This whole discussion was great, but if I had to boil it down to a moment:

Aaron and I watched the movie together, and I commented on how Tom Waits’s music persona was informing how I thought about his character in DOWN BY LAW. While recording, Harry then brought up the same point… independently!

HIS MOTORBIKE, HER ISLAND (1986) was a big one for @trylovepodca.st years ago, despite not actually playing at the @trylon.org then.

Now it is!

This ep’s from the first couple months of the pandemic, and you can hear in our voices that it was weird times. But at least it was a nice distraction.
𝐿𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛?

We covered HIS MOTORBIKE, HER ISLAND (1986) five years ago, when it seemed like nobody in the US had seen it.

Now that it’s playing at @trylon.org, we’ve republished our old episode. As a treat.

THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME (1983) is an Incredibly Ōbayashi Film. But also…

I hesitate to call it “restrained,” but where some of his other movies blend style with pathos, it’s somewhat modal here. It pops in and out of the craziness before blending the two in act 3
𝕀𝕥'𝕤 𝕒𝕓𝕠𝕦𝕥 𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖. 🍐

THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME (1983) is a different kind of time travel tale, rife with teen drama and melancholy, told in a way only HAUSU (1977) auteur Nobuhiko Ōbayashi could.

Here's our look at it!

Tatsuya Nakadai was a true legend and one of the last of his kind.

Obviously a standout among Kurosawa and Kobayashi's casts, but he also really tore up the screen as the lead, the villain, and occasionally both — like in Kihachi Okamoto's SWORD OF DOOM (1966).

Rest easy, king

Tonight, after the results Tuesday, only underlines how much we do not have put up with these moderate, spineless losers who insist that people die so the planes can run on time.

My wife Skye recently pulled off a historic upset in the race for Love Of My Life, unseating the incumbent- my fiance, Skye. Leading up to the race, my fiance Skye was preceded in the position by my girlfriend Skye, a friend named Skye & a person I only imagined but would later come to know as Skye.

Finally saw David Byrne live last night with @skyepinney.bsky.social, @punishedtake.bsky.social & @snzarate.bsky.social. Biked to the show in honor of Mr. Bicycle Diaries himself.

Thought it rude he didn’t let me know he was biking Lake of the Isles earlier in the day, but he’s probably pretty busy

Suck a fuck this Halloween, folks
It’s Halloweentime and Halloween means DONNIE DARKO (2001).

We covered it earlier this year with @finnematic.bsky.social — check out our discussion on this moody, broody, “2000s emo kid” formative text!

I could tell this episode was really cooking when we got talking about Chris MacNeil as an actress, and how the demon’s whole thing is piercing the veil on people’s social and spiritual roles
𝔼𝕘𝕠 𝕥𝕖 𝕒𝕓𝕤𝕠𝕝𝕧𝕠.

Timelessly spooky, hopelessly terrifying, and maybe truly evil — no Halloween is complete without THE EXORCIST (1973).

We dug deep on Friedkin's classic in episode 354 (with a special appearance by @metallicaisrad.bsky.social)!

Fear in a Handful of Dust: Hell, Faith, and Will in The Exorcist – Perisphere
|Harry Mackin| The Exorcist knows you're afraid of it from the moment it begins. Well before its disturbing supernatural plot starts in earnest, you can feel the malice Friedkin imbues into every shot...
