Hi, I'm Nina 👋🏻
and this is a new introduction.

Former architectural draftswoman and current hobby naturalist, now pursuing a BSc in psychology.

Here, I mainly post about critters with a few too many legs that we must honour and protect at all costs. (Occasional ramblings might be included).
She's flowering!

Usually, I cut the inflorescence since resources are spent developing flowers instead of upkeeping the leaves.

However, I'm really curious to see how it turns out 👀

Still one of my favourite pictures of an orb-weaver (Larinioides sp.) that just wanted to stay in our apartment to keep warm.

Today, I saved this orb-weaver from my husband...
Or did I save my husband from this orb-weaver?

Although being this adorable, I saw it my duty to release my new friend back into nature.

Look who I found crawling about:

Larinioides sclopetarius. A truly wonderful orb-weaving spider.

reading about organisms that aren’t your specialty is like

margins of the quorbus eplungulate, ploobular processes bent posteriorly towards the foobulum

define term “eplungulate”
- lacking plungae. synonym: thubulous

Can't believe I have to say this but climate change is responsible for extreme cold snaps.

What a dreadfully genius skeet.
Gotcha—let’s dig into that step by step.

1. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵, because I turned you into an amorphous lump of flesh. You’re not just immobile—you’re immortal, and you feel only anguish.

2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. That makes total sense—it’s a natural human impulse, and you’ve been through a lot.

I had a rather bad start into the NewYear™ and I fear things will only get worse (regarding politics/climate).

However, I've been visiting a crab spider (Diaea dorsata) that made its (overwintering?) home near the inflorescence of a now-dead Apiaceae.

She survived the repot and is thriving! The colours on this plant when the light hits it at the right angle 😩

This week has been a lot. Hug your loved ones.

About my friend (jumping spider) pictured below: Possibly Pseudeuophrys sp. (most likely P. lanigera, since they can be found indoors).

Insane to watch this happen in real time...
It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

I managed to film a jumping spider courtship IN MY APARTMENT!

The quality of the shot isn't great, but just look how hard the little guy tried 😭💔

(Spider species possibly Pseudeuophrys lanigera?)

I've been asked by a few people why I chose to study philosophy in the age of LLMs like ChatGPT.

I know this might be hard to understand but... I want to learn how to write and think for 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. This is 𝘸𝘩𝘺 I enrolled.

I also believe that critical thinking has become more important than ever...
Watching people become extremely attached to using ChatGPT to write for them has impressed on me the importance of developing enough self esteem, to not feel like you need your thoughts to be co-signed and composed by a machine.

Nobody believes their thoughts are good enough. They probably are.

Blind cave spiders~

This occurs due to the process of regressive evolution. In an environment without light, vision provides no advantage in finding prey or avoiding predators. The loss of their eyes means that energy and resources once used for eyes are instead allocated to other traits.

I started raising her from corm in April this year. She has now produced corms herself. I am so proud of how she keeps growing.

I had to up her pot size today. Needless to say, I am nervous. Alocasias are famous to be dramatic about it.

(If she dies, I will cry. Violently.)
