All people deserve healthcare, when and where they need it, regardless of their background, employment status, or personal circumstances.

Saw someone say, “Stop hoarding books, we don’t need paper books anyway” and I can’t express how misguided this is. Online libraries disappear, digital books can be altered, and with Big Tech seeking to destroy history and literacy, print media has never been more essential.

I read close to 50 papers in order to give an evidence-based, accurate response to Monday's press conference.

There's a lot to unpack here. I hope you find this informative.

All About the Tylenol-Autism Brouhaha
At an unhinged press conference last Monday, Donald Trump and his medical acolytes revealed an actionable cause of autism at long last: Tylenol. In what felt like a social media post come to life, Tru...

Shared some thoughts over on Substack on how systemic mistrust shapes public health narratives. It connects to my studies in sociology and health policy. Trying to make sense of how narratives influence trust in science. open.substack.com/pub/nicolemc...

I had so much fun reading this book. A line that stayed with me: “we are linked to one another not only by the strands of DNA that run through ourselves but also by the webs of culture we spin and share”

It’s so nice to be writing for my blog again. Going over what I’ve studied this term has reminded me why I decided to go back to university in my 30s I really hope you read them they’re nerdy & hopefully fun ☺️ new post: bodies as data, bodies as stories girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2025/06/07/b...
Bodies as data, bodies as stories
Why studying humans means asking better questions about evidence, ethics, and who gets counted When you think about health right now (your own or someone else’s) what comes to mind? Is it a number?…

It’s been a few days since I wrapped up YR2 of my #healthscience degree. It was my favourite academic stretch yet so I’m reviving my blog to reflect on what I studied not as an expert just as someone who really, really loved it starting here: The healthy human body as a map #academicsky
Start here: The Healthy Human Body as a Map
Health is everywhere, and somehow it’s nowhere. Everyone talks about it, sells it, markets it, optimises it but few agree on what it actually means. Before we study disease, pathology, or intervent…

Why haven’t we cured cancer yet?” It’s a question I hear a lot sometimes with a side of conspiracy. The truth? Cancer isn’t one disease, and it’s constantly evolving to outsmart treatments. I broke it all down in my latest post #healthscience Read here: girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2025/03/27/c...
Cancer. The disease we all know, but few truly understand
Cancer. It’s a word we’re all familiar with, yet it’s one of the most misunderstood diseases out there. People often ask, “Why haven’t we cured cancer yet?” Sometimes with a hint of conspiracy, as …

Lately, I’ve been thinking about ambition how it drives us and sometimes leaves us exhausted. Is it really the driving force we make it out to be? Just dropped some thoughts on my blog, if you’re curious: girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2025/03/12/c...
Contemplating: Ambition
Lately, I’ve been thinking about ambition. Not just as a concept, but as a force that propels and, at times, consumes. There’s a fine line between striving for something meaningful and chasing an i…

Halfway through the term, what a journey so far! From #cancerresearch to #fluorescencemicroscopy, #ELISA, & more math than I ever expected! this module has been intense, challenging but absolutely fascinating girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2025/02/20/m.. #maturestudent #womeninstem
Mid term reflection: What I’ve done, learned and loved so far
It’s crazy to think that I’m already a little over halfway through this module and with it, 67% through my second year of studying biomedical science. This final module of the year, Investigating t…

Kicked off this blog a year ago with some thoughts on why I write and what I’m trying to figure out along the way. No grand manifesto, just a starting point girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2024/01/12/s...
Coming from a place of ignorance, seeking understanding
There’s a humbling moment that sneaks up on you in adulthood. A quiet, creeping realisation that for all the knowledge you’ve gathered, it barely scratches the surface of all there is to know. It’s…

Hannah Arendt’s take on violence, power, and the erosion of empathy feels more relevant than ever. From totalitarianism to the politics of fear, her insights challenge how we think about authority and resistance. Some thoughts on her work: [book review] girlysteminist.wordpress.com/2025/02/17/b...
Book Review: Hannah Arendt on Violence, Totalitarianism, and the Decline of Empathy
In my last post, I explored the decline of empathy and how power structures thrive when compassion is framed as weakness. As I wrote, I kept circling back to two books I read in January: On Violenc…
