Apropos of nothing, thinking about the long forgotten Josie and the Pussycats film where sinister executives develop technology to manipulate thought and information ostensibly to make money amorally but really because they hope to force people to like them www.youtube.com/watch?v=-duh...

Wow. Imagine using this one weird trick to become an auteur filmmaker
Should you be looking for bathroom design inspiration here are some colorful ideas from the late 70s. Couldn't resist picking up a catalogue of sanitary ware from a local bus stop/ book swap. I mean, just look at the colour chart 😍

I only just realised that Jim Varney and Friendly Jordies look like they are related
The journey that the ERNEST GOES TO JAIL (1990) trailer takes you on is incredible.

I have no real interest or care beyond mild bemusement but Troy Bramston has written a lengthy puff piece on the Naked Gun reboot in the Oz

You can (should) love him for this alone. Would add that there's an earnest love for the medium that even if you did disagree with him it's coming from a sincere place and I miss criticism like that.

Maybe it's the Origin talking, but Jean Gabin (right) - in this still from the 1954 French noir Touchez Pas au Grisbi (Don't Touch the Loot!) - is giving some Phil-Gouldian vibes

This @roseschmits.bsky.social piece travelled very well all the way over to Australia as a now loved bday present. Incredible work, Rose. (HT @economeager.bsky.social for reposting Rose into my feed).

As an early adopter, I agree 100% with this. Generative AI was super-impressive when it first came out, but it hasn't really improved. And since the base version is cheap to produce, it's not going to produce monopoly profits for anybody www.wheresyoured.at/...
Godot Isn't Making it
Before we get going — please enjoy my speech from Web Summit, Why Are All Tech Products Now Shit? I didn’t write the title. What if what we're seeing today isn't a glimpse of the future, but the new terms of the present? What if artificial intelligence isn't actually capable

A butterfly was fluttering beneath the oversized Raptor 4WD in front of me in traffic. It was looking for safety from a hunting pee wee. It got squished by an oversized tyre. Feels like an omen or metaphor

Or copyright exemptions where material is not available on commercially fair and reasonable terms
There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc

I'm ecstatic that my new home is part of the Vic Gov’s 25 announced train and tram activity centres (we are 3 mins walk from Tottenham Station). I want more people to share what we have - proximity to transport, services, and the city. The place is perfect for more density. (Crosspost)

Love to see bullshit news stories about "AI" (it's spicy autocomplete) that include stuff like "analysts from Goldman Sachs say xyz". Ok, sure, but 2 years they said metaverse was gonna be huge, before that was cryptocurrency. Feels like media could perhaps provide that context. They make shit up.
