The cats know where it's at.
The first line of this story (“In Greg’s brain was a tumor that no one knew about.") is a variation on a line I encountered in a story by Diane Williams and couldn't stop thinking about. The only thing I know to do with such mind worms is to start working them into a piece of fiction.

We're going to have vestigial gas powered cars and car companies propped up by government policy (until it collapses) while the rest of the world moves into the future, and it's probably too late to fix this.
It’s amazing watching the U.S. cede the global auto market to China. We’re 24–36 months away from utter devastation in U.S. vehicle exports, because both automakers and the U.S. are scared of EVs, because a dozen petroleum executives have a whole political party at their beck and call.
