In case any poets needed some Dan Beachy-Quick tonight...

"When the eye loses the ability to see an object for the fact of its very nearness, then the imagination must alter the lens. A poem may bring us what we see in it just such a way."

Pretty clear that the Internet is overall a bad idea on the merits, but then writers like Nick just send you and post lovely, compelling stories.

And this year he's sending one out every week.

recently learned about “dek bass”, a sound system culture in rural West Bengal, using cassette decks and homemade systems, and it’s remarkable because 1) the music and equipment are sick and 2) the DJ always looks like he’s being briefed on a national security issue

To be fair, this kind of thing can happen if you've never actually talked to any women.

Writing tip: Make a nice cup of tea, drink it in tiny sips, take a moment to contemplate the miraculous way the morning light fills the room, and, if you’re lucky, the urge to write will pass.

OK, yeah. That was a good movie. Now I need to reread the book.
Have any of you watched Train Dreams? Verdict?

(Trying to decide whether to watch. (I liked the book.))

We're going to have vestigial gas powered cars and car companies propped up by government policy (until it collapses) while the rest of the world moves into the future, and it's probably too late to fix this.
It’s amazing watching the U.S. cede the global auto market to China. We’re 24–36 months away from utter devastation in U.S. vehicle exports, because both automakers and the U.S. are scared of EVs, because a dozen petroleum executives have a whole political party at their beck and call.

The New Yorker archives are fully digitized now, and the first thing I wanted to pull up was Pauline Kael’s 1977 review of Star Wars. No one writes reviews like this anymore. I love it.
