I find D compelling in a way that's completely out of synch with what a slog the reading experience is. I dunno. Fwiw, a friend who reads Russian fluently told me that his writing is very witty and funny in a mode that's virtually impossible to translate.

Thank you! I started overthinking it and began down the path of, well, if he's dead, then is there a dead body that is implied to take the transitive, and then I felt like I was losing my mind...
