Those feathers smoldered from within like coals against the dark of the forest, and the strange, warm light from them/they emitted glinted eerily off clear, cut glass eyes, eyes like someone had plucked a jeweled goblet from a castle shelf somewhere and cut and polished it down into two small, perfect spheres for her to regard him with. “What the /fuck/,” Mingi repeated, more to himself than to the bird.

Later, as they walked out together from the misty woods, Yunho slowly licking the blood, scattered flecks of human gore, and (from when NAME had tried in vain to shift halfway through Yunho's teeth clamping down on his neck) werewolf fur, Mingi sighed up in annoyance at the moon before opening his mouth to say, "I did keep trying to tell him you weren't a golden retriever or a collie or some shit. Like, literally every time he brought it up, at all those accord meetings, every time, and he just—" Yunho grinned silently at that, and just knocked their elbows together as they walked out past the last copse of moonlit, mist shrouded trees into the crunching gravel of the trailhead where they'd parked. The goofy, friendly tilt of his smile, even on his significantly less elongated human face, reminded Mingi of nothing so strongly as a funny video he'd once seen of one of Yunho's true, fully canine distant cousins, visions of socks with googly eyes and singing muppets echoing faintly in his head, but the lazy, rambling walk as they neared their car, the quiet, latent power coiled in Yunho's lanky limbs, whispered of something even truer to something even deeper in Mingi's hindbrain. Something alien. Something uncanny. Something dangerous, even — especially - to a wolf. Mingi shivered imperceptibly, then, trying to shake it off, and reached out as they finally reached their car to tug open the door, not bothering to wait for the beep at a press from the fob. Anyone out here this late probably had a lot better, or at least shadier, things to do than trying car doors to find an easy steal, so they'd left it unlocked lips, Mingi felt that uncanny shiver from before trying to make its way up his spine once more. He spared one last thought to NAME and his ignorance, his arrogance, all left to rot in a now unrecognizable pile at the foot of a blood splattered tree. "I kept telling him, not a collie, not a lab, wolfhound, you're a wolfhound..." He shrugged it off again, looking off across the trailhead parking lot to where the sun had begun to break against the already lightening sky, and distantly registered the sound of gravel crunching under bare feet as Yunho walked around the back of the car to throw his bloodied wet wipe into the trunk, then continued on before stopping to lean in, nearly through Mingi's window, with his forearms up on the top of the driver's side door. Mingi stared steadfastly through the windshield, key poised in the ignition, resisting (with a downright Herculean effort, in Mingi's humble and unbiased opinion) the urge to peer too keenly, too openly, at where that breaking light illuminated the planes of Yunho's face mere inches away from his own through the open car window, where it caught like summer sunlit cornsilk in the shining waves of his hair, where it caressed the long lines of the muscles, bulging slightly, in his arms, where they were braced above them both through the too thin barrier of the driver's side door. Yunho leaned in further through the window, the shadow of that strange, goofy grin still in the lines of his face and directed square at Mingi, before he finally replied, with a lackadaisical shrug, "His funeral."

When it comes down to it, the door’s still just a tattoo, even if it is a mystery. Yeah, it’s a door, and an unfamiliar one for everyone on board, but it’s not a door they can open. Jongho’s probably pretty grateful about that.

A jumbo-sized plastic jar of gummy bears had been included in their green room snacks this time. Possibly because it was getting close to Jongho’s birthday, but if there had been a note with them at the beginning, it was long gone now and he hadn’t seen it. It didn’t matter; intended or not, he’s getting a gift from it now: watching Yeosang line them all up on the table. Yeosang had been early in the hair and makeup schedule for the day, so he’s porcelain perfect, hair in waves that mean he can’t lie down anywhere to sneak a nap, biting his tongue just a little as he arranges his gummy bear grid with serious concentration. In the background, Mingi starts singing at the top of his lungs. Yeosang doesn’t even blink. Jongho shifts closer, not wanting to raise his voice unnecessarily. “Is there a pattern?” “There needs to be a good distribution of colors.” Jongho nods, looking at the arrangement with a newly critical eye. It does look like Yeosang has been keeping any one color from clumping up. “What are they doing?” Yeosang pulls another gummy bear out of the jar. A red one this time. He sets it in front of all the other bears, facing them. “Listening to you sing.”

“Mingi-ssi, please show Wooyoung-ssi around for his first day.” And with that, their boss left, leaving Mingi staring at his new charge, frozen as he tried to figure out what exactly he needed to do. He hadn’t even known they were filling a position in this department. What was Wooyoung even here to do? Wooyoung smiled at him. This did not help Mingi get his shit together. He swallowed, probably a little to obviously. Wooyoung’s smile softened almost imperceptibly into something less polite, more natural. “Hey. I like your bracelets.” Mingi reached over to spin one of the beaded ones, brain coming at least partially back online. “Thanks, I made them.” Wooyoung’s eyes lit up in excitement, his smile became a grin, and Mingi’s brain crashed again. This was going to be a long day, Mingi could tell. But maybe not a bad one.

“I hate this,” Mingi whispers. “It could be worse, Pink. We could be dead.” Yunho’s voice is like silk, low and smooth. Mingi swallows hard. “I knew your brother was a fucking cunt.” Yunho sighs. “He’s always felt slighted, but for no reason. The irony is that he’s never shown an ounce of interest in ruling his own country.” As he speaks, he slides his fingertips over to Mingi’s knee, tracing slow, lazy patterns over the outside seam of his trousers. Mingi watches, helpless, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. “Yeah, well, framing the worthless Flower King Consort seems like something an apathetic royal would think up.” “Don’t say that,” Yunho replies sharply. His hand suddenly curls around Mingi’s knee and squeezes, once. Mingi feels a sudden empathic rush from Yunho, something that feels very much like…longing? “What, that Ryeom’s apathetic?” “That you’re worthless.” Mingi snorts. “Your brother’s made it very clear how he feels about me.” “My brother isn’t me.” His hand carefully unfurls, his thumb moving back and forth in a gentle circle at the bend of Mingi’s knee. <i>He promised not to touch me</i>, Mingi thinks, but he can’t bring himself to care. Instead, he leans into Yunho’s touch like a leaf seeking sunlight. “Did the Honey Thistle make you say that?” he says with a weak laugh.
