The rise of people like Lander and Walz, whose ideologies don't exactly match mine but have the exact right combination of "love thy neighbor" and "fuck you, asshole" attitudes, is massive positive for people who care about left of center politics

According to a 2021 report, the University of California system:

• generated $82B in economic activity in California

• supported 529K jobs in the state

• generated $21 in economic output for every $1 received

Public divestment from higher ed makes no sense, even in the narrowest economic terms.
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

Can't slam "repost" on this hard enough
"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"

I really enjoyed Wolf Hall: the mirror and the light, but I was disappointed that the ending deviated from Mantel’s novel. She bookended the novel with Cromwell’s abusive father yelling at him, “get up!”. In the novel and the show this was the essence of Cromwell, always getting up.

They are only "Attack Plans" unless they're from the "War Plans" region of France.
This is REALLY the lame-ass defense they are going with? They were “attack plans” not “war plans”?

Douthat’s opinion piece sets such a low bar for our foreign policy that Trump was able to clear it while gleefully stomping on Zelensky and, quite probably, ensuring Ukraine’s destruction. US support of democracy is not “pretense” it is principle, even when that principle is only aspirational.

When drafting a post or reply do other people do a quick search to make sure that they are using a stock phrase correctly even when they have been using that phrase at least once a day for thirty years? I’ve been lucky so far but I know I’ve got some shame coming.

No matter your circumstances of birth, if you are a US citizen and are entitled to all the benefits and bound by all the responsibilities that fortuitous event entails. That is a bedrock principle on which our country was built. We have entered a dark chapter in US history.
