This is big: House Republicans tucked language into the budget res “rule” that bans the House from voting to terminate Trump’s emergency declaration used to impose tariffs. TL;DR lawmakers who vote for this are officially giving up their power to revoke his tariffs until October.

We are now in an era where protesting a car company is domestic terrorism, protesting genocide is international terrorism, and criticism of the tech industry is prohibited speech.

I don't think any sci-fi writers of generations past could have done our dystopia justice.

Meta said that the journalist "should never have received this response," but the incident set off a wave of concern over censorship online.

Authoritarians govern through fear, not legislation. The simple fear of what they would do in certain situations can push even the opposition to capitulate. That’s success for them.

We lose when we fold due to a hypothetical. We win when we challenge the REALITY that is hurting working people.

We're detaining tourists now and making legal residents disappear.

Boycott us. Don't visit. It will hurt but we have to clean our house. I'm utterly disgusted by how many are willing to sell their souls for a scrap of comfort.

Following orders doesn't justify violating human rights.

This is a massive violation of the first amendment and cannot stand. Even if you disagree with Mahmoud Khalil’s political views that is not a legal reason for political retaliation.
UPDATE — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now commented on the Trump admin’s detaining & attempted green card revocation of a Columbia Gaza encampment student negotiator:
“We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”
NEWS: Last night, the Department of Homeland Security detained a Palestinian who helped lead the Columbia encampment.

Agents told him his visa was revoked. He said he had a green card. They were confused—then said that was revoked too.

His attorney demanded a warrant. Agents hung up instead.

Reminder: When a person or institution you hate is targeted for illiberal persecution by an aspiring authoritarian, you have to defend them EVEN IF you don't like them. It doesn't matter if you don't like campus protestors or Columbia or the law firms. We must defend them or we're all at risk next.

The reason you have a federal bureaucracy full of technical and functional experts is EXACTLY so that some rando can go “oops accidentally fired all the people in charge of containing Ebola”.

This is an idiocracy.
Elon Musk: "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect ... so for example, with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola prevention."

Very clearly an attempt at another piece of the authoritarian toolkit: building a loyal security service to do the bidding of ruling junta.
EXCLUSIVE: Candidates for national security roles in the new administration have been posed loyalty questions, such as: Was Jan. 6 an inside job, and Was the 2020 presidential election stolen? They were asked to give straight "yes" or "no" answers. Here's our story.

Federal funding cuts and mass layoffs of federal employees will not just reduce the size of the federal government. It will tank the economy and spike the unemployment rate. Organizations around the country that use federal funds will have to lay off employees.
