I’m visiting my friend in Brazil, who is a leftist politician once targeted by Bolsonaro and the golpistas. People are literally stopping her on the street to give her a hug. As they say in Brazil, GRANDE DIA

Unfortunately, I can confirm that this is true.

I have known Carl for 2 decades and he is smart, dedicated, and quite apolitical, focused on science and getting stuff done on important problems.

Huge unnecessary loss of leadership and expertise.
Hearing news that Carl Dieffenbach, the Director of the Division of AIDS at #NIH (NIAID), has been removed from his position because he was "not aligned with HHS/OMB."

Russell Vought continues to remove great scientists as part of the Project 2025 mission to politicize and destroy NIH.

This is a story about how America’s world-leading cancer and dementia research system was destroyed by frauds and naifs who broke the law.

There must be consequences.
Some incredible details in this piece
*one DOGE faction was planning the future of the US government at a venture capital firm
*illegally communicating on Signal to avoid transparency laws was deeply embedded into organizational culture to be taken for granted

Rudy Bridges is younger than the Sitting President of the United States and 29 sitting United States Senators
It’s useful for people of my generation to be reminded that this wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges isn’t just still alive—she’s only 71, not ancient!
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

More people should read David Walker's Appeal because it illustrates how writing can in fact shape history.
On this day in 1830, North Carolina passed laws that criminalized teaching enslaved Black people to read and that made the repeated dissemination of anti-slavery pamphlets punishable by death.

At UVA, we owe a lot to our own union @ucwva.bsky.social and @aaup.org who have helped organize and galvanize opposition to state and federal threats to academic freedom like the Compact
Struck this morning by how the win wasn’t from the UC system itself pushing back—it was its worker power through *unions* and aligned groups like @aaup.org defending UC interests, even though admin itself wasn’t.
There’s some kind of lesson here
One reason why elite schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell) caving to Trump’s illegal impoundment and extortion is so galling — a betrayal, really — is that they would have won had they fought. By giving up, they guaranteed every other school will have to fight harder.

Jim Ryan’s account of his forced resignation as UVA President makes plain the depth of misconduct and bad faith the faculty have long suspected of the BOV. Every member of the UVA community should read this letter and appreciate the need for new leadership.

The thing that sucks the most about this lawless administration is that there is little hope for recourse—and some potential for risk—in bringing blatant violations of civil service law to a Supreme Court so juiced up about unitary executive theory.
This is an important case. IMO it's clear that this question violates the civil service law (and raises a constitutional issue under Rutan).

“Identify one or two relevant executive orders or policy initiatives that are significant to you, and explain how you would help implement them if hired.” 1/2
Federal unions are suing over a new job application loyalty question they say screens out candidates based on politics, raising fresh alarms about partisanship in federal hiring. Sr. Correspondent Erich Wagner has details: buff.ly/fsW47Xi

As God willed it.

Here in the DMV, us NIH people watched the Washington Post venerate Youngkin, and then watched Youngkin’s approval bomb when he got into office and voters figured out what he actually stood for. It’s not unlike the Trump story — in 2024 and last night — actually.
i wouldn't be a total glenn youngkin hater if i didn't mention that the results tonight mean that his total tenure amounted to presiding over the destruction — at least for the next few years — of the virginia republican party. lmao.
