A very poignant memorial to Ireland's Great Famine at Grattan Beach, Galway. The park is named after Celia Griffin, a 7 year old child whose death from starvation was the subject of a Galway inquest in 1847.

I met the current Mr Donovan on an early morning guided tour of the New Spitalfields Market over twenty years ago. He was then the Chairman of the Market Traders' Association, and wore a splendid gong on a ribbon signifying this.

The City loves its gongs.

Looking for some #speirghorm advice please.
I'm scheduling a few LON-DUB flights and travelling on to Galway, same day or next day for a weekend. Then doing trip in reverse to fly DUB-LON on the Sun or Mon.

Trying to decide on train or CityLink coach for Dublin/Galway travel. Any recommendations?

The Irish/Gaeilge word for 'solstice' is 'grianstad' which can be translated literally as 'sun stop'.

Which is very nice.

Directly reflecting the Latin 'Solstitium' - 'sun stopped'.

The B/W photo shows Newgrange in the 1930s before archaeological restoration. We found it in the home of our aunt & uncle Maureen & Bill Cox (RIP) - taken by someone in Bill's family.

On Highgate Hill, London N6 - a plaque memorialising 17th century poet Andrew Marvell. Author of "An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland" (1650)

"And now the Irish are asham’d
To see themselves in one year tam’d;
So much one man can do
That does both act and know"
