I know some people who follow me here are not in a place where they want various updates on political chaos/trauma.

Feel free to mute me (or specific terms) until things in Minneapolis blow over. I have no idea when that might be since we're being targeted.

But please save your spoons if needed.

As a ray of nice things, I managed to playtest five games in at Protospiel MN yesterday. Always a blast to see what our local board gamers are coming up with!

ICE attacked an observer after they tailed a group of clergy on a spiritual pilgrimage.

Our digital producer @sam.vp just so happened to be with the clergy on their journey. He spoke with the observer who was attacked and others who witnessed the assault.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

if you don’t live in minneapolis and you’re just watching from afar you need to get familiar with ring theory and stop venting your anger at us, it’s inappropriate and not helpful to have people who do not live here replying to us with negative emotions. stop putting that on us

The Star Tribune had an insane graphic about the presence of immigration enforcement in Minneapolis. There are more immigration officers in the metro right now than local police officers.

I'm continuing to read this filing today and it has other amusing tidbits. Such as ninety-five separate MPD officers showing up to the January 7 shooting scene.

Before you, evil has offered you two paths.

1) You do nothing as it takes everything you care about
2) You resist and then it blames you for taking everything you care about

It refuses to acknowledge a third choice.

That's cool! Ages ago I created a Letterboxd list of "Most often assigned in college classes" but it's pretty dated. It's neat to see some more recent stuff in the syllabi.

We’re entering the age of AI slop that people believe en masse.

This post is 100% fake and probably AI generated. All made up. Yet massive number of upvotes, views and shares.

Journalist @caseynewton.bsky.social got in touch with the “whistleblower.” The guy faked all “evidence” with AI…

/r/letterboxd frequently makes fun of thinking critically about their experience with a movie. They prefer unassailable takes like "it was fun" or "it was boring".

That's fine. I get that people tend to avoid introspection. But it's weird that they're so proud of their inability to know themselves.

I'm calling it a day early. I was able to watch everything on my watchlist this year EXCEPT White Out, Black In / Branco Sai, Preto Fica (2014)

I can't find a source with English subtitles. So it goes into the deep vault of things I want to watch but likely never will.

The process of a discovery is the development of taste.
This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default.

And, as always, the biggest misapprehension: We don’t want to NOT do this part. It’s fun to learn shit
Anyone who supports this is an embarrassment. "Instead of typing it out they'll generate their idea"? Are you insane?

Call yourself whatever you want but you aren't creatives, that's for sure.

I don't understand why people think subjectivity implies meaningless -- and specifically it being pointless to discuss.

If I enjoy pizza, and find someone else who enjoys pizza, we both understand the enjoyment is subjective. But we can still discuss where and how and why pizza can be enjoyed.

/r/letterboxd apparently can't handle the concept that people curve their move ratings. They think I'm lying to myself because my irrelevant magic number is relative to all of the other irrelevant magic numbers I've assigned to other movies.

My ratings curve even still looks like everyone else's.
