🚨 We’re hiring! 🚨
Come work with us at the University of Iowa on Orientia tsutsugamushi—a fascinating intracellular pathogen. Projects include building genetic tools + uncovering how effectors hijack host cell cycle + centrosome function.
Please share!

PSA for NIH R35s: My R35 was administratively withdrawn this year because I broke my Future Research into “Aims” & they said this violated the “Do not submit a Specific Aims page or identify specific aims” policy.
So. Don’t use the word “Aims” in an R35 - use “Projects”. #critical

I’m absolutely devastated. My heart goes out to those who put so much effort into these applications and to the panel members who dedicated their time and energy to reviewing them. Hoping for a swift resolution!
BV study section cancelled this morning, no notice. All of that effort.. 🤬 #NIH

Stunning microscopy and fascinating new insights from @lamasonlab.bsky.social on Rickettsia-ER contact sites. Incredible work!
Yamilex Acevedo-Sánchez et al. @lamasonlab.bsky.social characterize a novel interkingdom contact site between the ER and a cytosolic bacterial pathogen. They report that these bacteria–ER contacts (BERCs) require the tethering proteins VAPA and VAPB. https://buff.ly/4gXzZfI

🎉 Big congratulations to MSTP student Xavier Tijerina and Postdoctoral Fellow Jabeena on the release of their exciting preprint! 🚀 Their work sheds new light on CpoS and its interactions with host and other Inc proteins! Check it out here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Tetramer formation of CpoS facilitates Inc-Inc interactions during Chlamydia trachomatis infection
Chlamydia trachomatis ( C.t. ), the leading bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections, replicates within a unique intracellular compartment called the inclusion, which is modified by secreted...

Remember, many recommendation letters you were asked to fill out are due December 1st (many emails DON'T say this for whatever stupid reason). That is before you return to work after Thanksgiving since it is so late. Do it before you eat that Turkey. The students will have less indigestion.
