Very good 🧵on important role BBC plays in the UK as a kind of societal ballast.

Comparison to US, whose polarized & polarizing media landscape should be seen as cautionary tale by UK gov, compelling efforts to strengthen BBC to fend off attacks by unscrupulous opportunists, both domestic & foreign.
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

Pardoning only those most deserving. 🙄

“Mr. Braun, whose family used a connection to Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to obtain the commutation in January 2021, is at least the eighth convict to whom Mr. Trump granted clemency during his first term who has since been charged with a crime.”

In April, ahead of the anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride historian @hcrichardson.bsky.social had an interesting conversation with Sen. King on concentration of power in the executive and standing up to Trump. In light of recent events, be good to revisit that conversation and update the strategy.

Probably does not change where this was going, but wouldn’t it have been better politics for only 7 Dems to vote to move the CR?

Make it, at least for a few days, all about the Republicans being unable to get their house in order because they can’t convince Rand Paul to support it.
NEWS: U.S. Senate advances bill to reopen the federal government in a 60-40 vote.

Dems who votes yes:
🔵 Catherine Cortez Masto
🔵 Dick Durbin
🔵 John Fetterman
🔵 Maggie Hassan
🔵 Tim Kaine
🔵 Angus King
🔵 Jackie Rosen
🔵 Jeanne Shaheen

Republicans who voted no:
🔴 Rand Paul

@durbin.senate.gov you have been a good public servant for the state of Illinois, but if you no longer have the strength needed for the challenge of this moment, maybe you should move up your retirement and let @govpritzker.illinois.gov appoint someone who better understands what is at stake.
Durbin said critics of his vote “need to understand how the Senate works”

All his blundering and bluster makes it sound a lot more like 1914 than 1939 and some triggering event (with or without an Archduke) is going to put us on the path to calamity.

When he's done being president, looks like he might be a perfect fit for a revival of the Larry Bud Melman character.

Just needs to remember there is only one Calvert DeForest.

PS. Happy to hear the man who collapsed is Ok.

Interesting look inside Administration's make-over of the Kennedy Center

"Mr. Trump wrote..."I am doing the same thing to the United States of America, but only on a ‘slightly’ larger scale!”

He's not lying, its all here:
-Cronyism ✅
-Incompetence ✅
-Gutting an American Institution ✅
-Unpopular ✅

When does overinflated valuation of TSLA, foundation for overinflated pay package, meet reality?

Market values Tesla at nearly 6x Toyota, yet it generates less than 1/3rd revenue and 1/4th earnings

And TSLA sales are shrinking

CEO's M/O is over-promise / under-deliver.

When does the fever break?

The best way to think of FIFA is not as a sport’s governing body, but as a postmodernist satire of a sport’s governing body.

It then all makes sense and we can all share in a knowing chuckle.

Nearly 3hrs of SCOTUS oral arguments in tariff case, filled with so much repetition and pedantry makes you understand lawyering profession's dependence on billable hours

5 Min Approach:

-Is tariff a tax?
-Which branch has tax power?
-Did Article 1 delegate this power to Article 2?

Next Case
Supreme Court justices appear skeptical of Trump's tariff arguments
At issue is whether the president can bypass Congress and impose tariffs by citing national security.

This is really happening:

Mayor of the capital and largest city in UK is British Muslim of Pakistani heritage.

Mayor of largest city in US will be an American Muslim of Indian heritage.

Expect an increase in cricket discussion and maybe some LFC vs Arsenal chat, otherwise:

Dale Murphy over Dwight Evans??

Both very good players, but for me (admittedly a biased #RedSox fan) Evans was a very good player for longer part of his career

100+ Games Played:
Evans: 11 800+ OPS / 4 900+ OPS Seasons
Murphy: 8 800+ OPS / 4 900+ OPS Seasons

Also think Evans is better Outfielder

I know it means very little right now, but the Toronto #BlueJays were outstanding this whole postseason.

Saying this as someone whose team competes in the same division, baseball is much better when the Jays are good and Rogers Centre is rocking.

Congratulations Toronto on a great season!!

Someone will correct me, but believe Mookie Betts just became the only player with 4 #WorldSeries Championships in the 21st century.

Congratulations #Mookie !!
November 2, 2025 at 4:26 AM
Mookie with the 6-3 double-play and the #Dodgers win a great game 7, win the #WorldSeries and repeat as champions.

Yamamoto should be the WS MVP.

Congratulations to LA!

Think this is the one and only scenario where you can make a good case for changing the clocks:

Extra innings of Game 7 of the #WorldSeries

You have to kidding!!

And we go to extras in Game 7!
November 2, 2025 at 3:40 AM
Wow! Miguel Rojas!

He hits game tying home run with one out in the 9th of game 7 of the #WorldSeries

He has been questioned about some of his decisions in this series, but playing the struggling Rojas the past two games is not one of them.
Before it gets too late and one of these teams wins the #WorldSeries and write this as a complete neutral (thankfully) this has been a great Game 7. Close, tense, well-played, and the outcome still in the balance heading to the 9th

Any chance they can play best 2 out of 3 to decide Game 7?

Would like to see a replay of that Clement check-swing and see it compared to Kiké Hernández’s earlier.

Not saying Clement went around, but appeared close and unfortunate Fox has not shown a replay.

All the #CapitalOne commercials contaminating the #WorldSeries broadcast are proving the adage that More is not necessarily More.

Enough already with that bank guy!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

Kiké to Rojas for the double-play to win Game 6 for the #Dodgers

China continues to invest in green infrastructure and as a result is decreasing its demand on oil, expected to fall 4% this year.

The trip described is about the distance from NYC to Kansas City.

Appears if you build the charging infrastructure, range anxiety is no longer a real concern.

#BlueJays beat #Dodgers 6-1 in game 5 and head back to Toronto up 3-2 in the Series.

Like game 4, Jays pitching again dominates anemic Dodgers hitting.

Dodgers are 10 for 61 with only 2 XBH’s the past two games and Jays pitchers have struck out 22 hitters.
