BREAKING: Amazon workers in NYC are going on strike right before Christmas—the company's busiest time.

The first unionized Amazon warehouse is going to shut down in a historic walkout.

Workers plan to hit the company where it hurts to win their first union contract.

A big thank you to @profchander.bsky.social for including my essay on “ Disability & Race” in a vol much needed in the ‘80s, when I was an undergrad. Thanks, too, to St Hugh’s Oxford, for letting me air my work as the Lady Ademola lecture. Lady Ademola is an inspiration.

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.

Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.

Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"

Finally assimilating this obit and this loss— a poet & critic meet in an Indiana elevator, and together reshape the fundamental structure of literary criticism and, in the process, the general ideological field of the world. What a beautiful legacy. RIP.

H.R. 9495 is back on the calendar for next week. If this legislation passes, it could provide Trump with more power to suppress nonprofits and views he disagrees with.

Call Congress at (202) 224-3121 and ask your representative to vote NO.
House GOP Moves to Ram Through Bill That Gives Trump Unilateral Power to Kill Nonprofits
A bill to give Donald Trump power to kill nonprofits is still supported by dozens of Democrats — giving the GOP plenty of breathing room.

Bluesky academics, let’s get to know each other! Quote this & tell me 1) a procrastination activity you indulge in instead of writing & 2) your favourite food to stress eat

1) Video games big time, most recently Dead Cells, Inscryption, and Dark Souls 1

It’s amazing to me, & something I observe in my book, that the advice of actual activists like Grace Lee Boggs, below, via @prisonculture.bsky.social, sounds so little like the revolutionary action-fantasies expressed in (mostly male) social media posts & much more like the plot of Middlemarch
“We never know how our small activities will affect others through the invisible fabric of our connectedness. In this exquisitely connected world, it’s never a question of critical mass. It’s always about critical connections.”

Talked to my husband for the first time in that building! He complimented a Hunter x Hunter shirt I was wearing after a British 19th-cent. lit class and it was the highlight of my month lol. Always loved the mixed architecture that made up the humanities circle at UCI.
A ❤ for brutalism! Studying at UC Irvine gave me a taste for the style. Humanities Hall (below) is where I began German and French. Appropriate, perhaps, that it always looked to me like a spaceport. Windowless rooms, though, make it a poorer example of the style.

if i've learned one thing from doing union stuff while also doing other forms of organizing, it's that you're better off with people you disagree with who are nevertheless trying to do the same thing as you than with people you agree with who aren't trying to do anything
