Train delay again today. At least there was a little excitement this time - we had to evacuate the train! 🚂 First time I’ve done that.

Carl Sagan, writing in 1995, warned that soon America would be ruled by illiterate elites wielding “awesome technological powers,” and that most people, their brains broken by screens, would be unable to resist. We are living in the nightmare that Sagan foresaw.

@thebhp.bsky.social Do you know if there’s a problem with the members’ feed and Apple Podcasts? I heard you talk about a new members’ episode but it doesn’t show up for me. All the old episodes do, though.

Reading for pleasure has fallen by 40 percent since 2000. This is not progress. You should read because it's good for your brain, your soul. You should read because our freedoms will not long endure in a post-literate world. Most of all, you should read because it's fun.

Saw someone say, “Stop hoarding books, we don’t need paper books anyway” and I can’t express how misguided this is. Online libraries disappear, digital books can be altered, and with Big Tech seeking to destroy history and literacy, print media has never been more essential.

I knew that there would come a day when Melvyn Bragg wouldn’t host #InOurTime any more but I’m still very sad the day is here now (though happy for him that he got to make the decision for himself). I hope they find a replacement with as much gravitas and genuine interest as Bragg has had.

The current discussion/glee about “is he dead?” is making me want to re-watch The Death of Stalin SO BAD but I can’t because I have books that need to be read and also family visiting.

Trump doesn't seem to see that some people are still immune to his threats.

Jack White criticized Trump's Oval Office decor. The White House then called White a "washed-up, has-been loser... masquerading as a real artist." And White, undeterred, posted an absolutely blistering takedown in response.

People are reading AI-generated synopses of books and then claiming they read 100 books in a week. This is how the abolition of books began in Fahrenheit 451: classics were condensed into five-minute summaries for those too busy to do the reading. Later came the burnings.

Can anyone tell my why to you’d need to have corn starch in yoghurt? Because it makes no sense at all to me, and it means I can’t eat that yoghurt. Death to the ever increasing amount of corn in foods that don’t need it. #foodintolerance #intolerance #corn

I can’t comprehend why the book publishing industry seems to have abandoned hardcovers for fiction. Paperbacks are vile, fall apart almost instantly and I refuse to buy them. There are SO MANY books I want to buy but can’t because they’re paperbacks. #booksky #books #publishing #hardcover #paperback

Very unpopular opinion but I think in a healthier world our schools would teach the so-called “useless things”: Latin, old poetry, classic cinema, how to read and enjoy challenging novels. Studying these things won’t make you a better person. But they will give you a better life.

Another episode of animal incidents I didn’t expect to ever see (following the swan mating): when I looked out at the pier yesterday there was commotion among the gulls and oystercatchers. I thought they were fighting, but it was a mink who took one of the oystercatchers! We knew there were 1/2

Do not take legal advice from chatGPT.

Do not take medical advice from chatGPT.

Do not take financial advice from chatGPT.

In fact, stop using chatGPT. It’s destroying the environment, giving people terrible advice and lining tech bro pockets.
I have three hearings at three different courthouses today. At the second, someone was sobbing outside the courtroom. They'd asked ChatGPT what to say in Court. They believed what it told them.

They lost because it hallucinated, and they didn't know there were no do-overs.

Sure all the musicians looking at our £0.0003 Spotify payouts for our work are delighted this is what our fans’ money went towards instead, and the fans equally pleased.
