I'm very proud to have been offered the presidency of the cricket club I founded back in 2008 and skippered for 15 years. Lots of very happy memories created over the years and I'm glad to see the club still thriving #cavendishcavaliers
The Cavendish Cavaliers
Last night I was invited to the end-of-season awards night for the Cavendish Cavaliers, a very fine local cricket club that I ran and skippered for many happy years. To my surprise, the committee had an award for me and I was very proud to be offered the Presidency of the club. An absolute honour and one I was delighted to accept.

Guilty pleasures tonight, this week’s #midweekbeer is one of my homebrews accompanied by the Grease soundtrack.

On Friday I took part in the Moonrakers and Sunseekers audax, a 300km from Bristol to Poole and back. Here is the story of the ride.
Moonrakers and Sunseekers 2025
Beautiful dawn at Bournemouth It's 5.30am on a Saturday. The air is cold and crisp, bitingly sharp on the lungs. My fingers and toes are satisfyingly numb with the cold. Behind us, away to the east, the sky is starting to crimson below a thin line of grey clouds, and the warming air will soon shroud the water with a glorious fine mist that will scatter the dawn light.

There could only be one accompaniment tonight, after watching Deliver Me From Nowhere it has to be Nebraska. Exeter Brewery’s Darkness is the fine #midweekbeer

A middle aged man in faded jeans, an 80s rock band T-shirt and a leather jacket walks into a cinema and orders a beer. Must be time for the Springsteen movie.

Back at Hennock tonight on the edge of Dartmoor. So much amazing sky in this photo looking east from Hennock: Pleiades, Taurus, Orion rising and, I think, Jupiter bottom left. What a night.

This week’s #midweekbeer is a homebrew (unnamed) Vienna lager, only from a kit but it’s very nice. Accompanied by the brilliant and also slightly BIY pink-folk madness of Peat and Diesel 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏝️

I’m out camping on the edge of the moors tonight and captured this on my iPhone! #dartmoor

This week’s #midweekbeer is a pint of Trail Blazer, a 5.6% west coast pale ale from Dark Revolution in Salisbury. Every mouthful a reminder of those sweet three points. Accompanied on the vinyl by the Wildhearts, I must be in a good mood 😎 and looking forward to seeing them in Torquay in December

It’s funny rewatching Star Trek TNG and realising that we’ve already got better torches than they imagined we could have in 350 years’ time. It’s the little things.

Owing to a lack of decent beer in either my house or the local shops, this week’s #midweekbeer is a Hobgoblin King Goblin. Sometimes the right mood music presents itself and Springsteen’s Letter to You fits the bill perfectly - a wonderful record bursting with sentimentality and big picture warmth.

A Bunch of Lovely Trekkers
Machu Picchu seen from the Sun Gate at dawn, September 2000 Last weekend, I went away to Hay-on-Wye with a small but wonderful group of people. A group of people who, I have realised over the last couple of weeks, are very special to me. Back in September 2000, I was part of a group of about 40 charity trekkers who met at Heathrow airport heading for Peru.

Slowly working my way back through Star Trek, starting with TNG. Boys are watching with interest and I’ve just had a short but complicated discussion with eldest about ST physics and how and why it differs from Red Dwarf. More interesting conversations ahead I expect!

Does anyone still read blogs? If so, you're in luck. In which I get morose about autumn, enjoy a savage climb and hit a large pothole.

Summer ended pretty sharpish, didn't it? One day I was sitting on the decking in the evening sunshine enjoying a pre-dinner pastis and a few olives, and the next I was sitting in my kitchen listening to the wind howl while looking up recipes for hearty stews. This country. My least favourite time of year. The last Grand Tour is over and the long day of summer are gone.

This week’s #midweekbeer is a Gyle 59 Halcyon Daze wheat beer, accompanied by an early recording of Aerosmith live at Paul’s Mall in Boston. Would have loved to be around to see them in that era

Today is the day I turn these jaggedy-arsed hops into a glorious green continuous single-hope beer that I call Befuggled. Love the beer, hate the work!

Tonight we’re in a hotel after 13 nights under canvas. Our hotel is an Ibis and is TdF themed in the public areas, obviously I love it 😂 There is also a velodrome in town that we’ll go to have a peer at tomorrow.

Van is all ready to go for the annual trip to France. Trip three this year. It would be cheaper to move I think.

The last part of my Tour trilogy, reflecting on the impact of the Tour on the communities is passes through. Hope you enjoy it.
Reflections on the Tour de France 2025
Dawn over the Rance For once I'm the first one awake. The open skylight lets in enough breeze to wake and cool me, the first light of the day creeping into the attic room, last night's beers gently fogging my brain. I quickly get myself organised, make just enough noise to say goodbye to Graeme and, leaving the house mouse-quiet, slip out on the bike.

Teignbridge Council is looking to make savings and has said that the public toilets in Starcross and Sheldon are ’in scope’. There’s a petition for each. Please sign and share. Both are in holiday areas and it’s madness to even think of this.

It’s not easy this, some weeks. The beer chooses itself but sometimes it’s hard to find the right music. I can the vinyl from A to Z and back again and there’s nothing there that fits how I feel. Dad rock punctuated with occasional vain searches for something to keep me fresh and relevant.
