Forgot that I can be happy over here that Scott Adams died. Couldn’t have happened to a worse guy.

Watched It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and shout out to Lillian Randolph for the funniest line of the entire film. This diva.

Realizing the academy award ceremony where Vanessa Redgrave won best supporting actress and denounced Zionism was the same year Star Wars was nominated for best picture. She knew the award ceremony was going to have a huge viewership that year and took advantage of it. Queen shit

When NPR reaches out and says, “Hey, do you want to talk about Paul McCartney’s ‘Wonderful Christmastime’?” you of course say yes. www.npr.org/2025/12/01/n...
Is Paul McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime' simply… horrible?
In the decades since its release, "Wonderful Christmastime" has become a seasonal staple beloved by some but loathed by others.

“A film will speak politically whether its makers intend for it to or not, but storytellers shouldn’t be compelled to give neat, prescriptive messaging perfectly calibrated to the moral temperature of an audience.”

Part 2 of my Meet John Doe essay will probably arrive next week, just in time for December. Apologies for the delay to the 4 people who may read it.

As the year winds down and everyone is playing year-end catch up, please don't overlook Carson Lund's EEPHUS, a meditation on mortality and the transience of time played out during a small town baseball game that is quietly one of the most remarkable films of the year.

Wildest thing happened at my screening of Branded to Kill (1967) turns out the digital file the Alamo drafthouse I went to see it didn’t come prepackaged with subtitles. So the audience spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what the characters were saying. Got a movie pass and snack coupon though.

I wrote about DOG DAY AFTERNOON and its complicated legacy among trans viewers for my reader's choice series. My co-writer Caden Mark Gardner will be discussing many of these same topics tonight on TCM before this film is shown. Please tune in!

They Live by Night (1948) was the first film to have a tracking shot from a helicopter. Insane that Ray requested to do a chase sequence to open the film and then state it needs to be a tracking shot from a helicopter. Glad the producer had faith in Ray's vision cause its so cool.

Wicked spoilers: It is terrifying to contemplate that Glinda’s song “Popular” actually provides the whole thesis of the political landscape of Wicked. You don’t need brains/knowledge, all you need is popularity and you can become a dictator of Oz cause the citizens are stupid and easily manipulated.

So great to see college radio in all its glory featured in today's NYT. I interviewed for the piece (WFUV is at Fordham, WFMU is independent, formerly of Uppsala--such is the way with radio, which has more acronyms than the New Deal): www.nytimes.com/2025/11/20/s...
