Remember: There is nothing natural or inevitable about extreme inequality; it’s the result of an economic system that values wealth and power over human dignity and justice.
It doesn't have to be this way.

Our new paper is out! We show that assessing the effects of adding flower patches in cities is complex and their direct benefits for pollinator communities and pollination aren’t always straightforward.

The effects of flower supplementation on pollinators and pollination along an urbanisation gradient
Enhancing urban greenspaces for pollinator communities by planting flower patches is increasingly common, but their efficacy for different groups of insects (bees, hoverflies and moths) is unclear. O....

Understanding biology isn’t a phobia. Gender dysphoria is the only mental illness demanding the rest of society adopt the delusion as part of their treatment.
Ironically the phrase to describe those cowards unwilling to speak up for women’s dignity, equality and safety is ‘grow a pair of balls!’ 🙄

A Pallas’s Leaf warbler and unexpected Pallid Swift - November 4th a bonus late autumn day at Donna Nook — Graham Catley Photography
On Sunday November 3rd a Pallas’s Warbler was reported at Stonebridge car park Donna Nook. Not a great surprise given the good autumn for eastern vagrants but every one is a treat for the eyes and a bird not to be missed particularly when it is only 42 miles away. Thus, Monday saw me heading to said

The various committees who adjudicate on the occurrences of #RareBirdsUK get my respect for what’s often a thankless task; pushing bird identification criteria, documenting status and distribution etc.
But the lack of consistency for groups like wildfowl is worrying - see this thread!

Interesting(!) that these captive-bred ducks for sale in East Yorkshire seem to be unringed in very many cases. Baikal, Blue-winged, Green-winged Teals, plus Garganeys. Dread to think how many end up in the wild and in local bird reports... #ukbirding

Discovery of how a coral stiffens its skeleton on demand opens new directions for bio-inspired engineering
Touch the branches of Leptogorgia chilensis, a soft coral found along the Pacific coast from California to Chile, and its flexible arms stiffen. Penn Engineers have discovered the mechanism underlying this astonishing ability, one that could advance fields as varied as medicine, robotics and manufacturing.
