Uppsala universitet har, om man skall vara generös, bedrivit undervisning sedan 1477, vilket gör det till Sveriges äldsta universitet. Det var näst äldst fram till 1739, när studenter från Fjärdhundra nation for till Skara och brände ned det mindre Skara universitet med anor från 1300-talet.
