Opinion: Threats to judicial independence weaken democracy
This Trumpian-like threat to defund the judiciary crosses a red line from democratic disagreement into institutional pressure.

The UCP can’t claim to be a party of law and order when they are the ones defunding police, downloading policing costs onto municipalities, threatening to withhold funding from the justice system, and undermining the rule of law and the Constitution at every opportunity.

What are some of the “distinct legal traditions of Alberta” that Danielle Smith wants reflected in judicial appointments? How would Danielle Smith having more say in judicial appointments “ensure that judicial decision-making reflects the values and expectations of Albertans”?

Danielle Smith wants to be able to “direct” judges. She’s critical of them for being “activist” and “unelected”. Now she’s threatening to withhold judicial funds as a bargaining chip. She was caught interfering in the justice system but she refuses to learn from it.

“Simply put, we cannot have an independent judiciary if the premier — any premier regardless of political affiliation — has the power to “direct” judges.”

The Premier must retract her comments and apologize.

Instead of focusing on cost of living crisis, jobs, hospital wait times, education, public safety and issues that matter to Albertans — the UCP is busy stoking separatism.

We denounce separatism unequivocally and stand firmly with team Canada.

Will the Premier and the UCP MLAs do the same?

It’s an unprecedented statement.

It should concern every Albertan who believes in the rule of law, judicial independence and democracy.

The UCP needs to stop its provocative statements and attacks on judiciary and the rule of law in this province.
