When Trump says it won’t end up costing the United States to illegally invade and “control” Venezuela because of the value of their oil, he means there will be a massive public cost, but that’s ok because private companies and oligarchs, including his family, will make a ton of money.
People wondering whether the US is going to be able to "run the country" of Venezuela at "no cost" might like to remind themselves it's a place one-third *larger* than Afghanistan, the running of which cost the US $2,260,000,000,000. (That's $2.26 trillion).

Unconstitutional force. Civilians dead. Congress bypassed. Oil interests front and center.

We’ve seen this movie before and it ends in blood. But we don’t have to do it again.

These freaks want territorial expansion and they know Trump will do everything he can to deliver.

This isn’t just a tweet from some random asshole either. This is Stephen Miller’s wife. Miller was in the room with Trump during the kidnapping of Maduro.

Vantar þig hugvekju fyrir nýja árið? Þá mæli ég með þessari frá hollenska sagnfræðingnum Rutger Bergman.

Þetta eru þrír tæplega hálftíma kaflar sem mynda samhangandi heild (og henta vel í tiltekt eða matseld) auk þess fjórða sem er líka góður en aðeins til hliðar.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Ég velti því fyrir mér hvort það verði einhver athöfn, líkt og þegar Ok var minnst fyrir sex árum, um endalok bókaþjóðarinnar... 🤔

Það segja mér kennarar að börn fá fæst bækur núorðið. Ég óttast að eftir eina kynslóð í viðbót verður bókaútgafa komin í mýflugumynd.

Usually the question posed is whether AI's human like responses imply that they might be regarded as conscious.

This disturbs some, but rarely is it asked whether we're simply not as conscious as we assume — and would like to think — we are.

I quit the former Twitter two years ago this week, and I am here to tell you that my online life got a lot better for having left it. In two years I've not been tempted to go back, and I haven't felt any penalty in either career or community for not being there. It's nice to be here and not there.

Já, nema hvað bankarnir eiga ekkert endilega að skila eigendum hagnaði. Sé markaðurinn frjáls heldur samkeppni verði (og þar með hagnaði) niðri.

Reyndin er að markaðurinn er ekkert frjáls og við eigum að tryggja að fólki standi þessi þjónusta til boða án þess að arður leki í vasa fólks sem nóg á.

When it comes to designing cities for biking and walking, Ghent Belgium may still not be as well known as Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris yet, but it’s one of the most inspiring cities in the world. I was honoured to do some work with them in 2019. Watch @streetfilms.bsky.social’s fantastic video:

One of my absolutely favorite things about Korea is the public transit. There are buses, trains, and subways running across most the country and it's relatively easy to get anywhere without a car. There's still work to be done to make it 100% disability friendly but it is so much better than the US.
This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social
