so you know how I'm frequently like "hey, [THING] is not a binary, it's multivalent and complex and nuanced, please stop treating it as a binary"

as it turns out, cognitive rigidity/binary thinking is a primary predictor for extremism:

May every single human being on this planet be safe.

May every single person be protected from harm.

May we bring into being a time in which we are all free from those who do evil— together, speedily and in our days.

In a time of increasing overreach and hateful rhetoric, it's more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community.

Watched the first season of this show on Kumail’s recommendation. Lived up to his assessment exactly. So, so good.
Common Side Effects is the best show that I hear too little about. Animated show on Max by Mike Judge and the folks behind Scavenger’s Reign (another banger.) It’s hilarious, surprising, moving and profoundly relevant. Full recommendation.

I’ve long maintained that the difference between American tv and British tv is that Brits put smart people in a room and let them say whatever they want and Americans put stupid people in a room and script them.

After the SOTU tonight, methinks the theory stands.

Fascism is unsustainable. It is inherently built to fail, despite what its leaders want you to think.

The bigger question is not whether it will stand. It is: can we hurry its demise? Limit its danger to the vulnerable?

And just as important: what will we build after?

Mr. Rogers was talking to children. If you’re an adult, you’re supposed to be the goddamn helper (as much as is possible).
there is something insidious about adults internalizing “look for the helpers” as an immediate reaction to tragedy instead of thinking about ways to become one.

we are not all of the same ability but we have a common duty to each other… find your way.. become a helper… so others may find theirs.
