Unsolicited writing advice, #17171617:
Don't just write. Read books. Watch films. Look at paintings and sculpture. Play games. Go to plays. Listen to music. Think about how these things make you feel.
Making art is a two-way stream. To make art, you have to consume art.

Argh!
Here's another good reason not to use those stupid MSFT/OpenAI/Meta/Anthropic AI tools: "A ChatGPT-powered search, according to the International Energy Agency, consumes almost 10 times the amount of electricity as a search on Google." www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...
AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution.
Some data centers need as much energy as a small city, turning companies that promised a clean energy future into some of the most insatiable guzzlers of power

Aww that's adorable! Though not quite in keeping with the hashtag #poorlydrawnpets... More like #excellentlydrawnpets ! Also, how DOES one have a capybara for a pet?? Can you ask for us, @kookychooky.bsky.social ?
I signed up to be a volunteer illustrator for our state RSPCA's event called #poorlydrawnpets where people send in photos of their pets and a pool of volunteers draw them. I got to draw this capybara!! How does one keep a capybara as a pet.. 🤔

This!! If you have books you love or authors/illustrators you love… or author/illustrator friends with books out (which you hopefully love!) please do tell others about them!
Y'all, discoverability is harder than ever. With Twitter all but gone and publishing being --in a mood-- your favorite authors are floundering. We don't know how to reach our fans or find new readers. Telling someone about a book you love is a really big deal. That's the #1 reason people buy books!

Still so shocked and sad to hear of Benjamin Zephaniah’s passing.

Awww, thanks Jen! It was so much fun writing and researching this book which is 1/2 fiction about a neurodiverse biracial girl called Hana, who really, REALLY loves cats, and 1/2 NF (fun cat facts!). The fab, fun illustrations by @jenjamieson.bsky.social really brings it to life!
I loved designing these characters for this wonderful book about Cats! Written by @miodebnam.bsky.social and published by Oxford Children’s Readerful

#WriterBeware: Another fake agency doing the solicitation thing: Collins Literary Guild. Web domain just 54 days old, multiple ludicrously false claims of repped books, and a roster of AI "literary agents" w/ bios cribbed from Sanford Greenburger Associates collinslitguild.com

The Collins Literary Guild functions as a specialized firm, providing a comprehensive array of representation services to authors who are at various stages of their publishing journey.

Same!
I hadn’t realized how many voices I value had left Twitter until I got here & saw them on Bluesky. Like walking into a room of friends—or more accurately, spotting a bookshelf full of writers I adore.

I've been driven from my desk (by workmen standing outside my study window on the scaffolding...) And now there's a worker sitting in front of me in the lounge too. Even worse, she putting up opaque plastic on our windows to protect the glass from the building renovation. No more view for 4mths! 😢😢

Whilst I’m trying to figure out what’s going on, please enjoy a pic of Alfie who is almost completely blind but acts like he’s not - rushing around joyously, occasionally bumping into furniture and bouncing back instantly! He’s 9.5 years old but I call him my pup still!
