1)For 86 yrs, it's been legal for people with disabilities in certain jobs to be paid subminimum wages. The assumption: they're less productive & if not for these jobs, they would be unemployed.
In this @JAMAHealthForum paper, @atheendar.bsky.social & I ask if it’s true.

Our quarterly meeting is this Sunday 5PM EST over Zoom. DM for details.
I was 18, an teenager in India, anxiously searching online communities- “can you become a doctor with a stutter”? Found no answers. During med school, I was advised to apply to non-patient facing specialties; not to be ambitious and apply for residency in the US - “too risky”. 1/4

In our recent paper looking at perceptions of care received by people with disabilities (PwD), we found that:
-A higher proportion of PwD felt that they were not treated with respect by their healthcare professionals, not asked for opinions about their care, nor given easy to understand information
-A higher proportion of PwD felt that they were not treated with respect by their healthcare professionals, not asked for opinions about their care, nor given easy to understand information

The @inquirer.com dives into the debate over Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which allows subminimum wages for workers with disabilities.
Research by @atheendar.bsky.social & @mihirkakara.bsky.social shows repeal could boost job participation.

Workers with a disability can make less than $7.25 an hour. UPenn research sheds light on what ending that practice has meant in some states.
The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed a rule that would bring an end to the program nationally. Researchers examined the states of Maryland and New Hampshire that have already repealed it.

This rule was just released yesterday.
Findings from our recent paper provides the first evidence on this.
It suggests that after repealing these subminimum wages, labor force participation actually rises at a population level

1/ Sometimes our #policies encode assumptions about people that need not be true.
I'm really proud of @mihirkakara.bsky.social led this study on a hard question (conceptually+empirically):
Would repealing sub-minimum wage allows adults for #disability improve or worsen #labormarket outcomes?

1/ I've been practicing #medicine, as a #primarycare doc and then a #hospitalist, for over a decade.
Cross-cutting any #social or #partisan divides is an increasingly common feeling: people are feeling #stuck and #trapped.
I think we are seeing the reverberations of that feeling everywhere.
