Opting Out - rest, reflection, and resistance

Queer | Vajrayana Buddhist | bohemian | slow and simple living | frame drummer | home educator | bookworm
Dramatic skies over #Brighton this afternoon

Michelle, 49, lives in a Victorian house in the heart of Brighton, which is purple with a yellow door, + 'Reasons & Persons' + the 'Tao Te Ching' (two books they were reading while teaching yoga) sit on their dining table. They sit by the fire reading Knausgaard, like a Nick Cave song come to life.
h/T to @baddestmamajama.bsky.social who did this and really made me laugh:

"In an era when the one-armed bandit of social media vies for your engagement . . . the simple, archaic activity of squishing some free fruit into a secondhand jar feels like the ultimate hag remedy for half the world's problems"

May all beings have happiness
and the causes of happiness.
May all beings be free from suffering
and the causes of suffering.
May all beings never be separate from the supreme joy
that is beyond sorrow.
May all beings abide in equanimity
free from attachment and aversion.

Even online, when I joined a #CoResting session, something in me softened more deeply than it does when I’m alone. There’s a gentle magic that arises when people come together with a shared intention to slow down, honor their needs, and carve out space for care.

Tonight, the Strawberry Moon rises. 🌕🍓

Named by Native American tribes for the ripening of wild strawberries.

Anglo-Saxons named it the Mead Moon, when meadows were cut for hay, to sweeten the mead of midsummer feasts.

It's our last full moon of spring.

This one's for the weary, the #exhausted, the depleted: a yoga #nidra practice to nourish and relax.

Having learned a new respect for your heart
And the joy that dwells far within slow time" -John o'Donohue

Reflections on the intro from Rest is Resistance: This isn’t rest for the sake of returning to work refreshed and ready to achieve more. This isn’t the sanitized “self-care” of the wellness industry. Hersey’s vision of rest is expansive, ancestral, embodied. Rest is a remembering, a return.

Yutori is a Japanese word that means margin; allowance; latitude; time (to spare)’. So it roughly translates to room to breathe, a margin of time or space, mental ease.

What would it feel like to do the next thing, anything, with just a little more Yutori?
