The points of Maine have become my collaborators. Plus, Shirley Collins' voice as antidote to low blood sugar. Read the latest <<hells bells>>, my mostly monthly newsletter.
What's the Point?
I was staring at this sign, the mudflats, the red winged blackbirds trilling in the sumac. I was studying the busted canoes and trying to remember why I was at Wharton Point.

Is there a support group for writers who often turn in drafts to their editors that are over word count? Asking for a friend who consistently got in trouble in elementary school for not being able to summarize and who would like to include the story of this pic but sadly cannot. #StillGotIt #Details

My uncle has written another book and you can preorder a copy signed by her at the link below, from Charis books! Very nice uncle, very nice book.
Very very happy to be working with the fabulous independent feminist bookstore Charis! If you want to preorder a signed (by me) copy of IN THE RHODODENDRONS you can do it here: www.charisbooksandmore.com/book/9781643...

Also apparently you can request personalization? So that seems nice.

There’s a reason they don’t have writers pen their headlines. Alas, I penned this headline and everything inside it. Thanks for reading, bots!

The termination of Maine Sea Grant funding is a devastating loss for our coastal communities and marine industries.

This heartless, shortsighted decision threatens the progress we’ve made in addressing ocean acidification, warming waters and habitat conservation. It also puts livelihoods at risk.
UMaine loses multi-million-dollar Maine Sea Grant funding from NOAA
It is the latest fallout for Maine from the cuts the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk has made in the last few weeks.

Who knows what this is? Don’t guess—it’s an otolith from an #AmericanEel What a sight to behold! Such mystery contained within. I’m not saying that staring at otoliths will stop fascism but it’s a great palate cleanser.

The story I wrote about a Passamaquoddy eel conservation initiative got a shout-out in Sam Sifton's NYT Cooking newsletter yesterday. I'm chuffed + pumped that this story—which is just as much about Wabanaki sovereignty as it is about eels—is making it to an even bigger audience.
