Negativity bias means we pay more attention to bad news than good news, so we have to be extra loud with good news

The killing of Renee Good in MN should make law enforcement think twice before partnering w/ ICE. Do you want that kind of drama for your dept? https://michiganadvance.com/2026/01/08/federal-incentives-fuel-closer-ice-partnerships-with-michigan-police-agencies/

Yes and…
Excessive and intrusive strip searches are also abuse.
Same for videotaping strip searches of domestic violence survivors.

I wouldn't be as bothered by the fact that incarcerated cosmetology students are paying $2,600 for education expenses if prison wages weren't such 💩

This is bad on it's own, and I fear it will spread to LEOs.

Don't think these abusive tactics will stop at ICE or immigrants.
Immigration agents are choking people in America's streets & using tactics against their own policy/training. Many LEO agencies have banned their use

There's stats and there are stories. Only 61% of people w/ high parole readiness scores were granted parole last quarter. I'm curious what are the stories behind those flops.

Recovery is hard. It's harder when facing imprisonment, homelessness, unemployment, etc.

Medication assisted treatment helps a lot of people, and I'm glad it's offered at MDOC. I just wish there was also attention to what other conditions would support recovery.

Just heard confirmation from Sen Chang: There are no current plans for a detention center in Highland Park. That said, #StayVigilant https://gandernewsroom.com/2026/01/09/ice-plan-immigration-warehouse-highland-park-michigan/

$1.6M for employee wellness at MDOC. TBH, I'm still figuring out how I feel about this. I'm scared of the people who do /not/ need mental health support for this job, but I also imagine that spending on reducing abusiveness and trauma of prisons would help more.

Only a small # of the people who would be good candidates for commutation make it through the process. Gov. Whitmer, begin a vigorous commutation review for your last year in office! https://www.mlive.com/politics/2025/12/whitmer-grants-clemency-to-5-people-including-2-convicted-of-murder.html
Whitmer grants clemency to 5 people, including 2 convicted of murder
The governor granted the clemency requests to people she said had taken accountability for their actions.

It took two years, countless denial letters from landlords, and hundreds of dollars on application fees
for Ashia and her son to find a home—all because of her conviction history.

Watch her story and learn more about the need for #HousingNotHurdles:

As we gather at home with loved ones this holiday season, we must remember that too many of our
neighbors are denied access to housing solely because they have a conviction history.

Legislation like Michigan's Fair Chance Access to Housing Act can help ensure #HousingNotHurdles.

“We now look to ICE to conduct a thorough review and share their findings per their policy. Mr. Gantchev's death sadly underscores how the Trump administration is exacerbating unconscionable conditions in a detention system that is proven to be inherently inhumane.”
