Crazily enough, only 3 national Parliaments in the EU (Spain, Greece and Luxembourg) allow pregnant MPs to vote by proxy while on maternity leave.

Everywhere else, women having a baby virtually lose their mandate and are "just" not sanctioned for their absence. Talk about fair.

Who cares about making the Parliament "fun", leave that to us.

What matters is making EU politics more engaging & showcase the "spectacle of democratic oversight".

Many proposals in this are good, first of all having a proper Commission Question Time, like national Parliaments.
The European Parliament’s debates are often empty, tedious and scripted.

So Parliament President Roberta Metsola is trying to spice things up — but will it work?

If only Hungary had been given YEARS to switch its energy supply away from Russia like other countries did instead of increasing it.

Oh wait...

It's pretty rich to see Merz calling a vote of the European Parliament "unacceptable" and a "fatal mistake" to be "corrected".

We're still waiting for the Council to correct these fatal mistakes:
- No Article 7 on Hungary
- No sanctions on Israël
- No Treaty reform
- No own resources
- etc.

Posting a proud picture with the annual report of the EU Court of Auditors has to be a cry for help from Metsola.

That or I'm totally out of the zeitgeist and it's actually a super gangsta move.

You tell me.
Good to meet President Tony Murphy and to receive the European Court of Auditors annual report on the EU budget.

I congratulated him on his new term and reaffirmed @europarl.europa.eu’s commitment to ensure that taxpayers’ money is used efficiently and in the best interests of all Europeans.

I bet many MEPs regret that the news of Hungary trying to infiltrate the Commission while Varhelyi was the Hungarian Ambassador in Brussels didn't come out a year ago, when the Parliament could have vetoed him as Commissioner.

Now it falls on VDL to demand his resignation.

In the end, the far-right motion won the race, doing a similar score as in July (179 vs 175), still falling far short the 361 (minimum) threshold for a motion to pass.

The far left motion didn't get the support of most of the far-right & barely any of the disgruntled socialists/greens.
October 9, 2025 at 10:27 AM
Another demonstration that the EPP strategy of leveraging its potential majority with the far-right to break the S&D & Liberals on politically strategic files is working.

Iratxe Garcia and Valérie Hayer should start calling Manfred Weber "daddy" at this rate.

Yesterday's debate on the motions of censure was anticlimactic.

But it gave us a glimpse of what is sorely missing in the EU institutions: the spectacle of democratic oversight.

What if the Parliament had a REAL Question Time to control the Commission ?

Today the European Parliament is debating 2 motions of censure against the European Commission. Arguably an important event.

Except that the Parliament's own livestream doesn't work. Beautiful.
