Jimmy Carter's advice to a young person.

My nephew Matthew shared this letter with me yesterday. Five years ago, he wrote to all the living presidents and asked for advice on how to participate in public service. Only Jimmy Carter responded. A precis on how to live a life of service.

Dear everyone: I hope you are well, even when I’m not emailing you, so can we just skip that in emails?

Timeline cleanse
I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

This column on U.S. concentration camps is the one I hoped I’d never write

I was a teenager in the 80s, not the 90s, but this book resonated so much with me
I was updating another @stanchion.bsky.social title on StoryGraph and noticed that TLAT has its first review! Please, if you read the book and liked it, consider sharing your thoughts with the reading community!

Note how the subhead presupposes that you can “own” a human being. Maybe try “enslaver”? If you want to be polite and all.

American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. theatln.tc/IuULQFiY
The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Thinking about small things that give me joy. Walked the dog along the river, underneath sunny skies with the air as crisp as the leaves underfoot.

“The best friend of a nation is he who most faithfully rebukes her for her sins — and her worst enemy who, under the specious … garb of patriotism seeks to excuse, palliate or defend them.”
