every judge who’s ruled against

Ooookkkaaaayyyy…..
Loevy plays a video of a woman's arrest. Hewson says the woman was "assaultive" because she kicked a can of tear gas that had been deployed.

Loevy: "When you tear gas somebody … and they try to kick the tear gas canister away from them, that's assaulting?"

Hewson: "Yes."
November 5, 2025 at 11:28 PM
FYI - from the Chicago ICE/Border Patrol testimony
Loevy: "Tear gas is a serious weapon, would you agree?"

Hewson: "No."

Melvin Gibbs (@melvingibbs.bsky.social) interviewed in @jazztimes.bsky.social by @adamorosi.bsky.social:

"In 1980, I had to prove that I was one of the cats, that I was part of that community and making my mark. Now it’s about who I am as a person."

This is the person in charge of ICE in Chicago
Obviously his elementary school teachers didn’t make him read The Constitution
He reports directly to Kristi Noem
so I guess her teachers didn’t make her read it either
So, it’s up to the judge(s) now
The Bovino deposition continues.

Bovino: "I have instructed my officers that when threats are made, which is advocacy of violence, threats agaisnt law enforcement officers … that is arrestable."

…and now NY is just too damn expensive - the person fusing jazz&beats that did get the benefit of some degree of NYC infrastructure support in this era - Kassa Overall - is back in Seattle
the reason we haven’t had a Flying Lotus or Makaya McCraven in NYC isn’t because the person who rolled like that wasn’t here - Djinji Brown & Mark Batson immediately come to mind - it’s that the promoters & presenters in town weren’t ready for what they were doing - we didn’t have a Scottie McNeice
my hot take is
it’s the presenters, promoters, & publicity mechanisms that are different in NY - NOT the musicians per se
“Jazz” is inherently collaborative
you can’t make it by yourself (even if you play solo)

I had the NY vs Chicago conversation (among other things) with Makaya McCraven a few weeks ago - a big difference is when a collective comes up in NY the press tends to push one person -Steve Coleman for M-Base, DJ Spooky for illbient, Daid Ware, then Will Parker for EV free jazz -as the face of it

the original M-Base crew
was
Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Graham Haynes, Jean-Paul Bourelly, and Geri Allen
I need to dig in to the non-Coleman M-Base stuff, I just assumed it was his concept/ domain, I never considered it was broader than 5 Elements

I’ll be in Chicago tomorrow
at Theaster Gate’s Land School

beyond the obvious racism
his CV shows that he's built to EXACTLY to appeal to the Majority of NY'ers - it seems like whoever wrote this has never ridden the subway, let alone been to The Bronx
It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

the bathroom on the left looks like the bathroom in the house of a person whose family has been rich for a long-ass time

the bathroom on the right looks like it's in a suite in a hotel in a random city that has the bar where that city's A-level coke dealers & the highest-priced hoes hang out
The guy who tore down half the White House and keeps plastering tacky gold shit everywhere is suddenly concerned with the building’s aesthetic traditions.

it really feels like he's trying to goad someone into an assassination attempt so he can call out the troops
And now he’s on a posting spree of photos showing the remodeled bathroom. At least half a dozen of these posts so far.
