Tonight's movie: THE SPLIT, a 1968 adaptation of a Parker novel with Jim Brown in the lead. A good cast (Ernest Borgnine, Jack Klugman, Warren Oates, Donald Sutherland, Gene Hackman, James Whitmore, Diahann Carroll, Julie Harris) and a decent jazz-funk score by Quincy Jones. 6/10. On Tubi.

The only thing I remember about college is that I met my wife there. (I read a lot and am interested in a wide range of subjects, but I haaaaate formal education. Always have. Put me at a desk with someone lecturing at me and my brain shuts right down.)
Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college

Holy crap! One of the rarest Cecil Taylor releases - Friedrich Gulda's Nachricht Vom Lande, out of print since the 70s - was reissued on CD last year!

Coroner is playing *Billings*, Montana, which is 6 1/2 hours' drive (one way) from me. ☹️

In today’s mail: Kamasi Washington’s soundtrack to the anime series Lazarus (only available on CD in Japan), and two classic BYG/Actuel titles - Frank Wright’s One For John and Alan Silva’s triple LP free-jazz-orchestra blowout, Seasons.

Listening to an album we're going to be releasing in the second half of the year and all I can say is... DUUUUUDE. When I think about the caliber of artists who choose to work with us, it absolutely blows my mind.

Marmozets signed to Roadrunner Records shortly before I left; they were an absolutely blistering live band, and I really liked both the albums they made. They're on Nettwerk now, and releasing their first music since 2018. New album in May.

Had to move a large appliance down the front steps with much clattering and banging, and the two deer who chill in our neighbor's yard stood up and began nervously grooming each other, trying to decide if this activity was a danger to them. But the job's done, and they've settled down again.

I am not familiar with the work of composer Arnold Dreyblatt, but an album subtitled Music For Four Pipe Organs In One Space? I'm downloading that promo for sure.

So Wynton Marsalis is stepping down as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center... fine, I guess I'd be willing to take over if they asked nicely.

I do not love Sun Ra's music as much as others do, and I have a somewhat different view of his place in the lineage than others, BUT this documentary is seriously necessary and I am ABSOLUTELY going to watch.

German death metal band Teratoma will release their second album, Longing Voracity, in March; if you're a fan of floor-punching DM like Celestial Sanctuary, with awesome abstract cover art, check them out.

Re-listening to MAMA KILLA. Just an amazing record. I put Ava Mendoza and gabby fluke-mogul together with Carolina Pérez - they'd never met - and booked the studio; they did the rest themselves. So proud to have put this album out.

Rihanna's ANTI turns 10 this week. When I met Cecil Taylor at the Whitney Museum for a conversation that became a Wire cover story (and, later, my book IN THE BREWING LUMINOUS: THE LIFE & MUSIC OF CECIL TAYLOR), I gave him a copy as a gift on our last day together.

The Brazilian thrash band Nervosa are basically a Destruction clone, but I like them. They've got a new album coming out in April.

I added this clarification as I think it's worth reflecting:

"basic operations will continue; this stage of the process does not mean the lights go out. There will be an outcome to all of this -- there needs to be, because the purpose of the insolvency proceedings is to pay creditors."

Lotta musicians slipping out the side door today; I'm seeing reports that saxophonist Carlos Ward (BT Express, also played with Cecil Taylor) and pianist Richie Beirach have both passed.

The first four Fabulous Thunderbirds albums (newly reissued) are all good to great blues records, but their covers are across-the-board horrific.
1) Local wrestling poster!
2) Imitation B-52's!
3) Holding cell group portrait!
4) Last known photo before the horrific car accident!
