I am very proud to write for this site and its readers. (It took a couple of years for jazz publicists to recognize the reach my monthly column has, but once it sank in...) You should subscribe, especially since the column is now a members-only benefit!

The fifth and final volume of the BBE label's incredible J Jazz series will be released in March 2026. An instant purchase for me, perhaps for you as well.

Stereogum is one of those fancy reader-supported sites now, like Defector or Racket. Among other things, this means my monthly jazz column is a members-only perk, so go sign up! You're gonna want to read my year-end list next month, I guarantee it.

Anyone who sees this and is preparing a year-end list, please consider MAMA KILLA, the incredible album Ava Mendoza, gabby fluke-mogul, and Carolina Pérez put out this year on our label. It'll tear your head off, but put it back gently afterward.

Never heard it. (Heard OF it, of course.)
You know what's a good album? Revolver, by the Beatles.
Controversial opinion, I know. But it's that kind of shocking contrarianism you follow me for.

This is it, folks - these are the last three copies of Cecil Taylor & Tony Oxley’s Flashing Spirits, an amazing live performance from 1988. We’re not making more, so if you want one (and you do), order now!

The new box set version of Jimi Hendrix's Axis: Bold As Love might have the worst cover art of any super deluxe reissue EVER. That said, the mono version of the album, on Disc 2, is fantastic.

Prepping for an interview by listening to Miles Davis's On The Corner followed by Stan Getz's The Master... if you know who played on both records, you know who I'm talking to tomorrow.

I think this is very generous of him and I admire him for it. I think every aspiring Democratic politician in New York State should be given the chance to beat Andrew Cuomo in a primary at least once.

Can confirm that this is NOT happening in the Target I visited this morning, the location of which I will not reveal because I'm not about making retail workers' lives any harder. The cashier was friendly; everyone else was too busy working to bother me. Which is AS IT SHOULD BE.
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.
They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.
If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."
🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.

Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

Worth remembering on Grammy nomination day: You have to be a professional member of the Recording Academy to even submit your music for consideration, and two current members have to co-sign your application to join. Membership costs $150 a year. "It's a big club, and you ain't in it!"

My favorite tinfoil hat conspiracy theory du jour is that the west's geopolitical rivals have brainfucked us into going all in on AI - which is doomed - while they sink trillions into solar power and renewables - which very much aren't.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp ranted against short-sellers, calling out specifically Michael Burry after a filing revealed the investor of “The Big Short” fame had bets against the AI software company, as well as Nvidia, at the end of the last quarter.
