What if we simply embraced life and the challenges and tensions that come with that? Instead of willingly letting tech bros dictate what they feel is ideal and handing over our data, we unplug? I don’t want to live in a Philip Dick or Ray Bradbury—I think they didn’t either.
“What if you could optimize without effort” is one of the prevailing questions of ai boosters, and I am always left wondering: what is the point of achievement without effort. www.marieclaire.com/beauty/artif...

I absolutely love how @biblioracle.bsky.social always comes for standardized testing, manufactured writing, and all its ilk.
Half-baked, uninformed nonsense that repeats mistaken information from another half-baked take.

The rule of law is all or nothing and must apply equally to everyone. If there's no rule of law for some people in America, then there's no rule of law for any of us.

“The first people a dictator puts in jail after a coup are the writers, the teachers, the librarians —because these people are dangerous. They have enough vocabulary to recognize injustice and to speak out loudly about it. Let us have the courage to go on being dangerous people.”

SHARE WIDELY.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights.

You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one.

Watching this inaugural address and wondering about the rhetorical choices, exigence, purpose, and assumptions of audience. What do you notice? What do you wonder?

This is NOT how I wanted my break to end. What a disappointing game.

I am sick of punting; there seems to be no magic tonight offensively. It would be nice if they woke up.

“[When] you … expect us to acknowledge that you are ‘one of the good ones’… you’re showing us that our voices don’t matter... That you are more interested in appearing to be a good … than actually learning what it takes to become good.” An apt description of those who bask in exceptionalism.

Our leadership bowed to people who think Swift’s proposal is a good idea or a playbook.

All of this. We need to reflect on our goal: an arbitrary gain on a test made by non-educators carrying too much weight or actual thinking, empowering, etc. One feeds the machine, and the other changes it.
We can't simultaneously decry that students can't seem to do anything for themselves and then make a bunch of digital tools that do things for students. Either we're helping them develop their practices (skills, knowledge, attitudes, habits of mind) of a field, or we're not.

Our SC Dept of Ed has passed a proviso that allows for state-level book challenges. If a text is deemed too explicit, it must be removed from book rooms, school libraries, and teacher libraries statewide. Included in the 2nd round of challenges: The House on Mango Street. They barely permitted 1984.

Despite the world, and specifically US, saying “return to normal,” I think we are now getting to experience some of the fallout from lockdown. My juniors this year are seriously disengaged. No direct instruction, video component, work sample, etc. is working to move them beyond their complacency. 1/

I am so very grateful to Dan Levy and #SchittsCreek. This show is my go to for stress. First watched during 2020-2021 school year 🤪, and now rewatching 2 episodes for every cabinet announcement 😳🤬.
