Just started reading Du Mez’s Jesus and John Wayne, and this sounds/feels like the embattlement she describes. Problem is, children should not be seen as collateral damage for ideologies. Education is a public service.

Marks are so ambiguous (and at times even punitive). I know little about what a grade 3 can do or what standards they have. Bands of vertical discussions and collaborations offer reciprocity (enrichment, preparation, scaffolding, etc.). I recommended this in our district, but nothing happened.

Hard agree. Having a clear understanding of expectations and pedagogy (as well as alignment in teacher prep programs) is the way to growth. Despite generational differences in learning and teaching, we should work together to strengthen our knowledge and practice, helping all learners.

Unfortunately, I know that pain; the former student I lost this year was a victim in a robbery. Every last time it hurts. I am sorry for your loss, and I am praying for you and their family.
