New at Can We Still Govern: Here is one thing I wish more people understood about government. There is a lot of rent-seeking by private vendors in our social safety net. Trump's policies will make this worse.

So the pressure shifts from criticism to intimidation, from debate to punishment.

This is about silencing journalists before they can tell the story.

🚨 BREAKING: Don Lemon was arrested in LA following a protest connected to a disrupted church service in Minnesota.

This is an assault on independent journalism. Think about it. The right has tightened its grip on large chunks of mainstream media, but it can’t fully control independent voices.

This isn't about immigration policy; it's about the militarization of our public spaces. ICE turning our blocks into patrol zones makes everyone feel like a suspect, not a citizen. #ICEoffOurStreets

Is the UAE really a superb ally?

In Chile under Augusto Pinochet, political dissidents killed by security forces were labeled extremists or terrorists. The government praised the military and dismissed killings as unavoidable even when victims were unarmed or already detained.

Must we go on?

In the Soviet Union, state media portrayed people killed by security forces as saboteurs or traitors. Trials (if they happened at all) were propaganda tools. The goal wasn’t justice; it was to make the public accept the killing as necessary.

And this is not new. In Nazi Germany, after police or SS killings, the regime routinely branded victims as criminals, agitators, or enemies of the state then praised officers for “restoring order.” Evidence was selectively released or outright fabricated to justify violence after the fact.

This is how authoritarian narratives work you smear the victim, praise the armed agent, and ignore the killing. No video justifies an execution. No insult erases due process. This is propaganda, not accountability.

📌 Trump officials denounce guns at ICE protests after defending armed protesters in 2020.
