Constantly leaving my wallet in foreign countries
Great time to highlight that Arab Barometer data is collected in the respondent’s place of residence. I can personally vouch for its authenticity. Their strong personal and professional relationships with local partners makes this possible.
new paper by Sean Westwood:

With current technology, it is impossible to tell whether survey respondents are real or bots. Among other things, makes it easy for bad actors to manipulate outcomes. No good news here for the future of online-based survey research

PyPI serves billions of requests daily- but sustaining it isn’t free. The PSF joined the OpenSSF & others in calling for organizations to invest in sustainable open infrastructure. Learn what this means for #PyPI, the PSF, & how our community can pitch in:
Open Infrastructure is Not Free: PyPI, the Python Software Foundation, and Sustainability
In September, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) co-signed the Open Infrastructure is Not Free: A Joint Statement on Sustainable Stewardship Letter published by the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) as a steward of the Python Package Index (PyPI). As a follow up, I would like to share a bit more about the concerns expressed in this letter as they relate to our community and the PSF.

Egregiously bad take by Klein. He’s assuming (advocating) inherent good in in-person arguments.

Kirk built a brand on being loud and “right,” which resulted in bombastic, bad faith arguments devoid of intellectual curiosity.

It’s entirely possible to just say “people shouldn’t kill each other.”

NEW: Kristi Noem, while governor of South Dakota, supplemented her roughly $130,000 salary by secretly accepting $80,000 donated to a political nonprofit she was affiliated with, records show.

She never disclosed this income on federal ethics forms.
Kristi Noem Secretly Took a Cut of Political Donations
A dark money group paid $80,000 to Noem’s personal company when she was governor of South Dakota. She did not include this income on her federal disclosure forms, a likely violation of ethics…

People who've only seen the headline should really read the copy. Arguably the most concise and prophetic anti-war op-ed from that era. And we're doing it all over again.

And if Harvard complies with Noem’s records request, that may chill the speech of all international students across the country, at any university

Why should they come to study in the US, and not elsewhere?
Also: I assume Harvard will try to sue fast and fix things, but the cruelty this letter unleashes *today* will induce lasting fear and panic not just on the 6800 international students at Harvard, but also on all international students in this country, even if there is a swift TRO. Why stay here?
🧵 Today's revocation of Harvard's ability to enroll international is awful for many reasons, chief among them the human cost as @jeremywallace.bsky.social notes. It's also an attack on the US economy. But maybe less obvious: it is terrible national security policy. It makes Americans less safe. 1/

Today was my last day with the Arab Barometer. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this project. I’m incredibly proud of all the work we’ve done. Both our core staff and field partners have operated with courage, grace, and integrity. I look forward to seeing what they will do next
