Here's another great thing that happened at the 2025 LSA in Philadelphia: Gillian got a Lifetime Achievement award! The room was filled with colleagues, old friends and young fans, it was so nice to see ❣️
We are delighted to report that Gillian Sankoff was honored on Saturday, January 11, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Pidgin and Creole Linguistics. A very well-deserved recognition of her long and influential career!

Cecile Richards, who passed away today at 67, was interviewed for the current print issue of the Texas Observer by reporter @marytuma.bsky.social.

This story was going to run online later this month, but here is the interview now in light of the news:
Cecile Richards Isn’t Giving Up the Fight

Coming onto Bluesky just now, when a friend of 33 years has recently died and the world has shifted, there's a lot of comfort to be found. Very grateful. This morning's post by Mark has lots of good links, with a focus on Bill's Bunny paper

This such a great thread - by a lovely person -
Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.

I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.
